Editorial Reviews

Review

“The soldiers in Our Harsh Logic have come forward to rouse the conscience of their fellow citizens....Anyone who thinks the IDF limits itself to confiscating weapons and punishing terrorists when patrolling the occupied territories would do well to consider what its own members say.”—The Nation

“Random brutality, Kafkaesque bureaucracy, hatred, and dehumanization: that’s the face of Israeli rule in the West Bank and Gaza as described by disaffected soldiers in this troubling oral history....Our Harsh Logic conveys a truth about the inescapable ugliness of Israel’s military rule over its neighbors.”—Publishers Weekly

“Humanitarian activists and opponents of illegal Israeli settlements will find much ammunition in these pages.”—Kirkus Reviews

This is a "must-read" book for anyone wanting to understand the effects of the Israeli occupation on not only the Palestinians but on the soldiers whose job it is to enforce that occupation. These are moving, powerful and disturbing testimonies.

Breaking the silence has been collecting testimonies of IDF soldiers for over six years, and this book is a selection of testimonies from 2000-2010, covering the bulk of the latest round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in the aftermath of the breakup of the Oslo accords.
This is a one-of-a-kind collection of first-hand evidence on what Israeli soldiers actually do every day, paid for by the US taxpayer (among others) and how they think of themselves while doing it. Your view of the conflict will never be the same.

This is a difficult, but important read for every Jewish person living in, or outside of Israel. It is critically important that we understand what is actually happening on the ground in the occupied terriotories.

Recently heard one of the soldiers speak locally who assisted with compiling this testimony of Israeli soldiers for the organization "Breaking the Silence". His courage and compassion for his fellow human beings came through loud and clear. Our WILPF chapter purchased two copies for local libraries. This book is about healing and is an excellent resource for any veteran who has experienced active duty during war or occupation.

it's an incredible book of testimonies. everyone interested interested in what is going on in the West Bank should read it. the book exposes with moral anguish of the harsh situation the soldiers face and their courageous decision to expose the often unnecessary violence and abuse by the Israeli army.

these are brave ex soldiers who are telling the truth of what happens during israels military incursions into Palestinian territories, which are happening with increasing frequency and more and more brazenly.

the efforts of the authors of this book, to expose these untoward practices, must be commended. Israel has already dismissed these testimonies as false, but the level of consistency in the testimonials in this book, speaks for itself, and leaves no doubt about the extent and premedidation of these policies. please support breaking the silence, who authored this book. please buy this this book and let everyone see the real face of the monsters who call themselves the most moral army in the world

is it moral for soldiers to deliberately and gleefully, destroy olive trees, which are the sole source of income of destitute Palestinian farmers??

This is a book full of important statements from the ones that actually took part in a conflict with no winners. As such books often are, it becomes a bit boring to read, but it is still important, very important

These testimonies by Israeli soldiers reflect the often harsh and brutal policies of the Israeli occupation. Every time a Palestinian is injured or killed, the Israeli government claims self-defense; the facts show otherwise. Palestinian farmers and fishermen can be killed for simply trying to eke out a simple living under occupation. Israeli soldiers enforce a brutal apartheid system to protect so-called "settlers" who live on stolen Palestinian land in contravention of international law. It's unfortunate that more people in the U.S. know little about the reality of the occupation. Perhaps if more people knew the truth, the Israeli Defense Forces would have to account for their actions.

I applaud the courage of these former IDF soldiers in speaking out. Surely this is a very difficult thing to do in Israel.
