Book Description

May 10, 2010 4 and up
Our Home is like a Little church was written to teach preschool children the Christian doctrine of the home as a place of worship where the father teaches his family God’s commands and leads them to worship the one true God.
The home is the front line of ministry to children-not the Sunday school or public church gathering. All the practices present in a Christian worship service-the Scriptures, prayer, and praise-should be present in the home as well. Our Home is Like a Little Church teaches this truth by repeatedly putting church and home side by side-on adjacent pages.
God expects parents to teach their children when they sit down for meals, when they drive along the road, when they lie down for bed, and when they get up in the morning. These “pastoral” duties can be daunting so this book also serves as a reminder that these duties are done in light of God’s grace shown to us through Jesus’ work on the cross.
Parents and children together can read this engaging little book in order to discover what God’s plans are for worshiping Him inside their home.

I've reviewed Sojourned last two worship CD's, BEFORE THE THRONE and OVER THE GRAVE, both very positively, but I never expected this: last week a received a book in the mail - a children's book, none-the-less! Needless to say, I was a bit surprised, but being a father of two I made plans to put the book immediately to use. Life happened, so that didn't, and the book entirely disappeared from my "to-do" stack.

Last night I walked into my 4-year old son's room, looking for it, and Kenimer (my son) asked what I was looking for. "A book about Daddy being the pastor of his home." "Oh", he perks, "I read that one last night!" "Last night" is a phrase that means "sometime in the recent past", and Kenimer aims to please, so I figured he would just pull any book out of the large pile by his bed, but after a minute of two of shuffling, he emerged with OUR HOME IS LIKE A LITTLE CHURCH. My 4 year old is unable to read, so it says something about a book when he was able to perfectly understand it's meaning from the pictures alone. It also means something that he apparently stole it from my pile of things to review, and added it to his personal library on his own.

Today I read to Kenimer what he affectionately refers to as "The Church Book", and he said that he liked it. As an adult, the content of the book is very good, though - to me - not terribly engaging (I don't think I'm it's target audience, however). I did like the simple, whimsical illustrations. My two-year old, Tucker, also a fan of the illustrations, particularly liked the cut-out hearts, covered with Scripture, which appeared through-out. In fact, I later caught him on his own, skimming the pages and saying to himself "heart", every time he saw one.

At worst, I can say that Our Home... is at least good enough for a 2 year old to sit, without coercion and peruse on his own, and for a 4 years old to sneak back into his room, and not only look over, but comprehend to a large degree, simply from the pictures. As a parent, I like the illustrations, and the content was unique: a lesson in how the home can serve as a place of worship and Word. In my book, that makes this book worth owning. Thanks for sending me a copy, SOJOURN!

5.0 out of 5 stars phenominal book for parents and young ones June 13, 2011

Format:Paperback
I'm a pastor in the Presbyterian Church in America. This is, hands down, one of the finest children's books I've read with my 4 year old. It humbles me as it reminds me that I'm the pastor (literally) of my family first, and my church second. It connects the Jesus songs we sing at home with the corporate worship we give on Sundays, and it connects the proclamation of the Word of God and grace of Jesus with the discipline (read discipleship) moments at home. It's awesome. Buy 5 and give them out to your friends.

In the midst of our busy lives, it can sometimes seem convenient to relegate the teaching of scripture, prayer, and worship to the professionals at church. While that may be the easy way out, as parents we must be mindful of God's word, which exhorts us to minister to and teach their own children (see Deut. 4:9; 11:9). Expanding on this theme, Our Home is like a Little Church introduces preschool age children to the doctrine of the home as a little church. In addition, it serves as a gentle reminder to parents that the spiritual disciplines present in the church on Sunday should also be present in their little church throughout the rest of the week.

Touching on the topics of prayer, Bible reading, and worship, Our Home is like a Little Church contrasts church and home side by side, showing how these spiritual disciplines can and should be present in both our churches and our homes (i.e. little church). The artwork looks like it could have been drawn by a child and is perfect for engaging the intended preschool audience. I especially enjoyed the rhyming throughout the text, which gave it a good rhythm and made it a lot of fun to read. This book was a fast favorite amongst my youngest children and we have enjoyed it many times. I highly recommend this book and give it an overall rating of 5 stars.
