Biography

Lords of Acid is a Belgian acid house band which was formed in the 1990's, brainchild of Maurice Engelen (Praga Khan).

Their flair for penning overtly, absurdly sexual acid house dance tracks has earned them a cult following. The debut album included "I Sit on Acid", "Rough Sex" and "I Must Increase My Bust" all delivered in typical new beat fashion. The musical style evolved somewhat over the… Read more in Amazon's Lords Of Acid Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Misunderstood and Underappreciated, the Lords Battle On, September 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Little Secret (Audio CD)
The Lords of Acid are easily one of the most misunderstood, underappreciated and reviled bands of the 90's. Their three full-length albums- Lust, Voodoo-U and Our Little Secret have often been met with disgust, repulsion and occasionally hate. Some record stores even refused to stock Voodoo-U on account of the graphic cover images of female devils licking and squeezing at their private parts. Yes, they're a different kind of band. And yes, some people don't like them very much. But hey, a lot of people didn't like Robert Mapplethorpe's photography, Larry Flynt's Hustler magazine and any of John Waters' films. Like those controversial pioneers before them, the Lords of Acid are on a mission. This has never been clearer than on Our Little Secret, the latest release from the foul-mouthed Lords. It should first be noted that the lead singer is not some macho-man with a rough voice who shouts pornographic lyrics into a distorted microphone, but is instead the unassuming, mischieviously charming Jade 4 U (who's hard-to-find import-solo album is actually available on this site). Don't let the blond hair fool you- this woman can SING. Case in point are tracks like the painfully sad "Man's Best Friend", about a young, unattractive prostitute's deepening depression regarding her life's direction; and on "Deep Sexy Space" in which Jade rivals Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" in terms of intensity, power and talent. Other tracks on Our Little Secret well deserving of attention are "Me and Myself", in which Jade realizes that she is in fact her best sexual partner; "Rubber Doll" with its miami-bass style rhythm and humorous lyrical content; and "You Belong to Me" which features an incredibly hilarious mock-phone call from Jade filled with enough profanity to make a drunken sailor blush. Our Little Secret is defnitely on of 1997 most overlooked albums and a true gem. The Lords of Acid have always been an exceptionally intellectual band, the only difference is that they choose not to flaunt they're smarts with pretentious lyrics, trendy design or in any way that normally defines what is culturally intelligent. They're not Madonna, but they're a whole lot grittier. They're not Hole , but they're a whole lot tougher. They're not Tori Amos, but they're equally adept. It's a style exclusive unto the Lords and it's not for everyone, but it's definitely for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy and Wicked, July 23, 2004

LOA are just plain amazing. Other musical acts have tried to imitate their sound but have failed miserably. I purchased "Our Little Secret" when it first came out but have rediscovered it recently and I'm still thrilled by it to this day. This album touches upon all sounds of music from hard house, rock, happy-hardcore, industrial... but the LOA way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, but not their best, January 2, 2002

A little slower tempo on this CD. Still, some excellent tracks. My faves: Lover, Rubber Doll, Pussy (hilarious), and Outer Space ("Close Encounters" never sounded like this).

If this is your first LOA purchase, go with LUST or VOODOO-U first.
