Misunderstood and Underappreciated, the Lords Battle On,
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Little Secret (Audio CD)
The Lords of Acid are easily one of the most misunderstood, underappreciated and reviled bands of the 90's. Their three full-length albums- Lust, Voodoo-U and Our Little Secret have often been met with disgust, repulsion and occasionally hate. Some record stores even refused to stock Voodoo-U on account of the graphic cover images of female devils licking and squeezing at their private parts. Yes, they're a different kind of band. And yes, some people don't like them very much. But hey, a lot of people didn't like Robert Mapplethorpe's photography, Larry Flynt's Hustler magazine and any of John Waters' films. Like those controversial pioneers before them, the Lords of Acid are on a mission. This has never been clearer than on Our Little Secret, the latest release from the foul-mouthed Lords. It should first be noted that the lead singer is not some macho-man with a rough voice who shouts pornographic lyrics into a distorted microphone, but is instead the unassuming, mischieviously charming Jade 4 U (who's hard-to-find import-solo album is actually available on this site). Don't let the blond hair fool you- this woman can SING. Case in point are tracks like the painfully sad "Man's Best Friend", about a young, unattractive prostitute's deepening depression regarding her life's direction; and on "Deep Sexy Space" in which Jade rivals Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" in terms of intensity, power and talent. Other tracks on Our Little Secret well deserving of attention are "Me and Myself", in which Jade realizes that she is in fact her best sexual partner; "Rubber Doll" with its miami-bass style rhythm and humorous lyrical content; and "You Belong to Me" which features an incredibly hilarious mock-phone call from Jade filled with enough profanity to make a drunken sailor blush. Our Little Secret is defnitely on of 1997 most overlooked albums and a true gem. The Lords of Acid have always been an exceptionally intellectual band, the only difference is that they choose not to flaunt they're smarts with pretentious lyrics, trendy design or in any way that normally defines what is culturally intelligent. They're not Madonna, but they're a whole lot grittier. They're not Hole , but they're a whole lot tougher. They're not Tori Amos, but they're equally adept. It's a style exclusive unto the Lords and it's not for everyone, but it's definitely for me.

LOA are just plain amazing. Other musical acts have tried to imitate their sound but have failed miserably. I purchased "Our Little Secret" when it first came out but have rediscovered it recently and I'm still thrilled by it to this day. This album touches upon all sounds of music from hard house, rock, happy-hardcore, industrial... but the LOA way.

Good stuff, but not their best,

A little slower tempo on this CD. Still, some excellent tracks. My faves: Lover, Rubber Doll, Pussy (hilarious), and Outer Space ("Close Encounters" never sounded like this). If this is your first LOA purchase, go with LUST or VOODOO-U first.

"Our Little Secret" by LOA is one of their very best. The vocals of Nikki combined with the spine shattering techno-esque beat and controversial lyrics will knock you on your ass. It is a fun cd to listen to, and it has been a star of my cd collection for years.

One of a kind,

A certain reviewer here compared Lords of Acid to Thrill Kill Kult...First thing LOA are from belgium, Thrill Kill are from Chicago...their sounds are VERY different, LOA are more electronic, cold and theatrical, while Thrill Kill are more 'american band' based using a lot more live instruments and using way more samples (something Lords of acid used to do). Thrill Kill are a rare make up, and so are the Lords, but you cannot compare them simply because both bands combine synthesizers and guitars. But I do believe both acts are (probabbly accidentally) political and do mock the deviants and negatives of our sick society (but not because the other band does). "Our Little Secret" is one of a kind and ahead of it's time...at first listen, it was kinda hard to accept, because of the drastic transition in sound from "Voodoo-U", but every time I listen to "..Secret", it gets better and better. The tracks "Man's Best Friend" and "Pussy" are my favorite and they show Jade 4 U's wide range of vocal styles. Also those tracks "Rubber Doll", "Pussy", and "Spank..." sounds a lot like what producers are trying to create with the 'electro-clash' sound thats happening now, 4 years later.

I think these guys cop alot of musical style from My Life With The Thrill Kult but Nikkie is a much better singer than anyone TKK ever had and I LOVE the style anyway so 4 stars minus the one for originality.

Not their best, but much better than the rest,
This review is from: Our Little Secret (Audio CD)
Our Little Secret is not the Lords of Acid's best album. Lust is. Period. But this is not by any means a bad CD. Your usual shock value is there on all of the tracks, but along with that is a great sound. It's unfortunate that they don't get more airplay because the music that goes along with the lyrics (that I love, go ahead, call me a pervert) is great. It really makes you want to move and have fun.

Not Their Best But Better Than the Rest.,

Why did I give this CD five stars? Simple, even though I preffer "Lust' and 'Voodoo-U' to this, their 3rd effort... It STILL kicks ass! Compare it to anything else that came out hsi year and the Lords win hands down.

This was the first album that I happened upon by mistake; once I heard it I was hooked. I do compare this to other albums by LOA, it's just really a great album better than others in my opinion.
I cannot decide which album is better, this or Farstucker. One thing I noticed about this album is there is an angry element of LOA on this album that I don't see in other LOA Albums - but I'll take it. You won't be disappointed with this album...

just a tease,

This album is a little disappointing for a LOA fan, especially after the orgasmic explosion of Voodoo-U. They stay true to the format as far as lyrics go but most of the songs sounded kind of weak and cheap. It's a decent album, with good tracks like Lover, Rubber Doll, [....], and You Belong to Me. If this is your first experience with the Lords, don't write them off yet, go and get Lust and Voodoo-U( their first two albums) and then prepare for the electronic orgy!
