5.0 out of 5 stars Retro-cooking for children of the 50's and 60's, April 26, 2002

Remember "Potato Chip Tuna Casserole?" How about "Waldorf Salad" and "Sunday Fried Chicken?" This book is full of recipes from our childhoods along with vintage pictures and fond remembrances. Just seeing the ruffled kitchen curtains and formica dining tables transports me back in time to when food was uncomplicated and fun. This book makes a wonderful gift item.

My mother made all the recipes in this graphically appealing book.
It may be why I never learned to cook but then again, I loved reading the stories of food memories, fragrances and childhood moments. Have you noticed this is now fashionably called "comfort food"...well it always was that, it's just taken the chefs of the world to catch-on. As a mid-westerner, I'm thoroughly enjoying this classic book. I can smell my Mom's homemade bread as we speak.

This neat little cookbook is a must-buy. My mother's been gone for thirty-six years, but not a day goes by that I don't think of all the wonderful things she used to do for me, not the least of which was her marvelous cooking. Authors Udell and Cutler have assembled a collection of the kind of mouth watering, home-concocted recipes that were characteristic of our mothers' generation. Wait till you try mother Jesse Johnson's recipe for Wild Rice Casserole!

This book took me way back to my childhood and teen years. I got a warm feeling reading the stories and I could relate to many of them. I can smell the aroma of those wonderful dishes even today.
