5.0 out of 5 stars Her Cabaret Days Paid Off, September 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Private World: Sally Mayes Sings Comden & Green (Audio CD)
Mayes hits her mark with this CD, now a standard in my rotation. I used to go to hear Sally whenever she performed in Dallas and her unique style and range show through on this CD. An incredibly engaging performer, her CD draws you in and makes you want more! Being a true Sally fan for years, I have introduced many people to her music and they always ask "When's her next CD coming out?" Too many favorites on this CD to single out just one. New York is lucky to have Sally.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Smash!, August 4, 2006
This review is from: Our Private World: Sally Mayes Sings Comden & Green (Audio CD)
A great way to introduce yourself to the wonderful Sally Mayes! I remembered her from the Closer than Ever show recording, but this was the first studio cd I bought of hers and it won me over completely. I love her brassy style of singing (not that she cant be subdued. The ballads here are great too). This is a tribute to Comden and Green, but its a very eclectic mix. There are few well known songs here (I Can Cook and The Party's Over-sung a capella, the only cut I dont like). I didnt realize how many great "unknown" songs they wrote. The Hallelujah Baby! songs are a revelation. Made me run out and get the recording of that forgotten show. If you are a theater buff, or just love standards sung with va-voom this has your name on it. Hopefully, you'll buy more Sally. A LOT more! Favorite cuts: Together/Fireworks; If; Learn To Be Lonely/My Own Morning; Our Private World; Call Me Savage. Welcome to Sally Mayes and ENJOY!

4.0 out of 5 stars when its good its very very good..., October 11, 2000
This review is from: Our Private World: Sally Mayes Sings Comden & Green (Audio CD)
...and when its bad, its still ok.

sally mayes, who so excelled in the revival of "she loves me" does a fine job with the comden & green songbook, equally mixing the familiar with the unusual. the best is her performances of the sadly neglected songs from "hallelujah baby", but i found her reworking of the "on the town" songs a bit disappointing -- not that theyre bad, theyre just not fresh like the other material on the album. and oh my, her version of "our private world" is quite nice indeed. but the absolute highlight for me is the medley of "my own morning" and "learn to be lonely", the only song included from the underrated "doll's life". there she soars! is it a must have? no. but is it a should have? you betcha.
