This review is from: Our Sacred Texts: Discovering the Jewish Classics (Paperback)
This book is an excellent overview into the span of Jewish literature. The Amazon profile says that it is for ages 9-12, though I would say that it is primarily for the older students. It is in fact possible that they meant to say grades 9-12. I have been using it in a fourth grade classroom in a day school and they love it -- but only because I have read through and edited out those passages that are above their heads, and we spend a lot of time on vocabulary, and we don't make use of the exercises. Even so, they are a particularly precocious group who enjoy a challenge. In a day school environment, I'd say it can be used "as-is" for seventh grade on up; in a weekly or bi-weekly supplementary religious school environment, I'd give it to confirmation students and above. It could also be used with adults in an intro course, such as a conversion course or adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The pictures and exercises are not juvenile in tone and content (which is why my fourth graders love it).
The only negative? I do wish it had also included the Hebrew text. |
