More About the Author
Dan Schmidt grew up in the Bahamas; since then he's lived in the US and Latin America. He's caught sharks, seen Kilimanjaro backlit by lightning, pastored churches, and cooked for summer camp. He likes libraries, kayaking with his wife, experimenting with barbecue, and talking with his kids. Intrigued by a variety of topics, he writes both fiction and non-fiction. I'm using this collection of short readings as part of my daily devotional discipline this Advent. The writers (most of them young people) express their messages with great economy of words, but still with a depth that I find very rich. Schmidt has done a good job of selecting the pieces, and hanging them together loosely around a lectionary. A very good aid to people who don't want to be bogged down with too many words.

This year, I will be observing Advent by reading this book. Our Savior Come contains 20 short essays, five for each week of Advent. I have indulged in quite a few of these essays already, and they are speaking truth to my heart that is at once quieting and arousing. What a beautiful and needed combination! In addition to the essays, Our Savior Come features Advent activities, orders of worship for Lessons and Carols services, and a discussion guide for small groups. These inclusions solidify Our Savior Come as a great resource for any pastor, parent, or leader looking for inspiration during the season of Advent.

I received this book as a gift and am looking forward to using it with my family this Advent season. Being familiar with the work of several of the contributors, I'm confident this book will encourage us to understand more deeply the meaning of Advent and celebrate more joyfully the coming of the Savior! The activities in the back of the book make the ideas in the reflections practical for people of all ages. I'd highly recommend this resource to individuals, groups and families seeking to preserve the true meaning and significance of the Advent/Christmas season.
