Book Description

0495095540 978-0495095545 March 26, 2007 010
This is the most respected and authoritative college textbook available on human sexuality! Cutting edge and written in a direct, non-judgmental manner, this new edition of Crooks and Baur's OUR SEXUALITY has been thoroughly and carefully updated to reflect the most current research findings. This new edition is the first college text to bring cutting-edge and in-depth emphasis on the impact of politics on sexuality. Sensitive, comprehensive, and candid scholars and teachers, the authors keep you interested with the most exciting, emerging research and coverage, and focus on strengthening healthy communication among partners. Crooks and Baur have also revised their overall coverage on maintaining a responsible and healthy sexual relationship, with greater attention to diversity and inclusiveness. Other highlights include a new feature called "Sex and Politics," that examines the issue of value judgments that become public policy and what this means to sexual knowledge and to sexual choices. For example: information on different types of condoms was pulled off the CDC Website and replaced by abstinence only information, despite the fact that there is no empirical support about the efficacy of abstinence only education. You'll also enjoy the "Author's Files," which include new stories about the experiences of real people.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Your text is concise, well written, thorough, well organized. I think your updates of the 9e are great! You have a great text—when comparing to other texts on sexuality (8 texts others at my disposal) I find yours the most comprehensive and current—two vital components important to me in teaching the subject!"

"In terms of thoroughness of scholarship, this text is simply the best."

"There are many recent studies cited in the textbook and that’s an advantage over many texts out there. I feel this text is so timely and up-to-date with my students. The student aids and self-help/instruction featured boxes (e.g., female and male Kegel exercises) are very informative, well-selected, and helpful to students. The quotations by participants or the authors’ personal files are a wonderful way to connect with students because most students like to read stories rather than dry research findings and charts. In addition, this text is the best example I have seen in regard to contextualizing the findings of studies with racial/ethnic minorities."

"The chapters written by Crooks and Baur are superbly crafted. What I like so much about the draft chapters written by the authors is they include personal anecdotes throughout the chapter and by doing this, the chapter is so much more engaging than some of the chapters in the text I currently use."

"Let me emphasize that, overall, this is an excellent text. I believe it is probably the best text in the field. Finding criticisms for this book was a very difficult job." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

The integration of psychological, social, and biological components of human sexuality in this text is facilitated by the blending of the authors' academic and professional backgrounds. Robert Crooks has a Ph.D. in psychology, and his graduate training stressed clinical and physiological psychology. In addition, he has considerable background in sociology, which served as his minor throughout his graduate training. His involvement with teaching human sexuality classes at the university and college level spans two decades.

Karla Baur a obtenu une maîtrise en travail social. Elle a suivi avec Robert Crooks une formation clinique et a participé récemment à la mise en œuvre d'un programme d'éducation et d'intervention HIV/SIDA au Kenya. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative college textbook!, January 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Sexuality (Hardcover)
Easy to read. Basics of human anatomy start the book after a bit of background on human sexuality and gender roles. Explicit pictures and photos. Topics range from STD's and abortion to Cybersex and Loving Relationships. Text gives suggestions for further discussion throughout! Useful definitions appear on the pages where they first appear in the text. Paper and script used very easy on the eyes. Website sources and further readings suggested at the end of every section. Small glossary, but definitions taken care of in text. Author and subject indexes extensive. Very informative!

5.0 out of 5 stars Textbook used for upper level college course. Informative!, January 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Sexuality (Hardcover)
The course is called HUMAN SEXUALITY and many jokes have been born around it! "When is the lab?" etc. But the editions of this book have been used for as long as I can remember, and now that I am in the class I can see why! From a standpoint of information it is unsurpassed I am certain! It is easy reading, informative, and as the first sexually EXPLICIT textbook I have ever used it has been very easy to deal with! The book goes step-by-step through the basics of human anatomy and topics range from STD's to abortion to Loving relationships in very straightforward language. Our professor has been able to encorporate group work, and field trips as well as our own personal study. Discussions suggested from the book have been some of the best ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best textbook I've ever been assigned to read...., January 3, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this textbook for a human sexuality 3500 class. I took the class online, thus the importance of my comprehension of the material within the text was crucial. I may have slightly enjoyed a textbook on occasion, but more often than not they are simply a means to a grade. This was not the case with "Our Sexuality", which I loved! Sources cited within the text have led me to more reading, I even purchased a few first editions of the works of Kinsey, Ellis, and Masters & Johnson that were referenced early on. I had a friend visiting from out of state and she read the entire textbook over her weeklong stay. I briefly questioned selling the book back, (I normally await, eagerly, at the chance of pawning off my pile of overpriced unused crap that they call textbooks.) But the need to purchase new overpriced crap for the coming semester led me to list the book on EBay, it sold for $50.

I saved almost $30 by purchasing the textbook through Amazaon instead of the bookstore. Amazon has certainly become my preference for purchasing textbooks.
