4.0 out of 5 stars A peek into the life of a teenage girl...
I'd say being a teenager was one of the best and worst times of my life. This movie shows the trials and tribulations that girls have to go through...teen pregnancy, money troubles, friendships coming together and some breaking up, guys, school..

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought
This movie was not as well acted as i thought it would be. The story line needed more to it and the actor's seemed like they did not know what they were doing. I did not like this movie very much. I thought; as i had seen Kerry Washington in "Save the Last Dance" that the movie would be better as i think that she is a good acctress; however, i was dissapointed.

The three main characters of the film created a beautifully acted story that was so natural, that you fell into it and found it very believable. I liked the acting better than I liked the movie.

It shows you that even though the scenery may change the feelings still are the same for every girl because we all go through it.

Some light humor was included and depressing times as well.. it was all interwoven nicely throughout the film. Not just a "chick flick" its for everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars The theme of their lives., January 2, 2004
This review is from: Our Song (DVD)
Lanisha, Maria, & Joy are three best friends who are part of the Jackie Robinson Marching Band. They share secrets and petty squabbles and seem to think that life will keep them together. Then, one by one, life begins to caress each girl in different ways, with Maria's lopsided relationship with her boyfriend, Joy's bonding with a different set of females, and Lanisha trying to hold them together while facing to prospect of leaving the city to attend college, leaving her bosom lifelines behind. A little lengthy, this film still makes a statement. Life can be a beautiful thing, but it's the reality that makes it challenging, and change can make it more difficult. Kudos to the three actresses involved in making this coming-of-age movie truly unforgettable.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Film with first time actors, June 4, 2003
By
Ernest Acosta (Bronx, NY United States) - See all my reviews
I recently rented the dvd version of "Our Song". To my surprise this film is exceptional and the acting of the three young ladies was much better than a lot of the hollywood stuff floating around. Director McKay ("Girls Town") wrote a very "REAL" script about the day-to-day life of being a teenager in New York. Filmed in Crown Heights, Brooklyn this film brings us close to three teenage girls going through trials and tribulations. You get the feeling that you are looking in on their lives in real time without them knowing. The Jackie Robinson Marching/Step Band rocks. The realism in this film really catches your attention and the girls are very addictive. Kerry Washington (Save the Last Dance, Bad Company, Lift) is a wonderful remarkable actress. She plays a 15 year old with incredible depth and range, eventhough she was 22 when the movie was filmed. Considering that this was McKay's second film and the three girls' first film, they should have either won some award or at least nominated for an award. I feel if this film was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival it would have been accepted and possibly awarded a prize. Melissa Martinez who played Maria was also good as well as Anna Simpson who played Jocelyn. All these young ladies should definitely consider a full time career (as Washington is doing) in the dramatic arts. A film that everyone must see!!! TWO THUMBS UP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Fresh, Jim McKay's Our Song is sublime, February 24, 2002
Rarely has there been a more realistic and satisfying film about high school friends as Our Song. Three high school girls living in Brooklyn discover that when summer ends, they will be sent to different schools as their current school will be closing due to an asbestos problem. The way these three friends deal with their respective comings-of-age, and slowly drift apart is unrushed and sensitive. Throw in the terrific marching band routines performed by the Jackie Robinson Steppers, and outstanding performances by the three lead actresses (especially Kerry Washington) and you've got a winner in this film.

This review is from: Our Song [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Thats all I can say about this. My mom is actually the one that checked this movie out. I really enjoyed it. I agree with everyone else that It really feeling like your watching these girls life and they dont know it. I like the way OUR SONG just tell an honest story about three NYC girls and their everyday lives living in Crown Heights,Brooklyn. Even though this movie is rated R(for language and some teen drug use)it is safe for kids of all ages to see it. Its not just a chick flick. Im a guy and I liked it. This movie combines poverty, friendship, boys, hard choices, and teen pregnancy in one. Well check it out for yourselves. bye. im out. I admit that the movie was hard to keep up with but it was still an awsome movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Talk, January 28, 2005
This review is from: Our Song (DVD)
I believe that the movie was wonderful, I also like the fact that it can relate to a everyday life that young people go through. The movie showed many ups and downs that everyday people go through in the Ghetto. One main thing I like is that each person had a choice to make in their life, in a very short time and all i can say is that's real you can't get no real then that..I respect the director for this flim and hope he makes more like this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars good movie, July 16, 2004
This review is from: Our Song (DVD)
This movie I seen on cable tv,on starz. It was a good movie about the average life of young teenage girls who like to party, have guys and try their best in school at the same time.I liked the idea of the movie how the girls always try to keep the other up so they could succeed together, thats what true friendships are for.I felt sad that they seemed 2 grow apart in some ways. but its always good to give your friends some space. It sometimes helps build stronger frienships. I also liked how the all of them had jobs, and whatever bad qualities(character)they had it all showed & there was no sugar coating the lives of these young teenagers because none of them were totally innocent & neither are the ones that are out on the streets today... a real good movie to rent ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING, November 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Song (DVD)
OUR SONG IS ABOUT THE MOST REALISTIC MOVIE THAT I HAVE SEEN THUS FAR...WHEN I 1ST SAW THIS MOVIE I CRIED AT THE END BUT I DIDNT KNOW WHAT I WAS CRYING FOR BECAUSE I DIDNT UNDERSTAND THE END OF THE MOVIE SO I GOT ON THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE MOVIE AND I WAS SO SHOCKED BECAUSE THAT EXPLAINED THE REASON I CRIED. THIS MOVIE IS A GLIPSE OF 3 TEENAGE FEMALES GROWING UP IN THE INER-CITY(BROOKLYN). THIS MOVIE WAS A OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF TRUE LIFE IN THE INERCITY FOR YOUNG FEMALES. IT WAS SET IN THE SUMMER WITH THE GIRLS HANGING OUT DOING NORMAL STUFF TEENAGE FEMALES DO AND THEY HAD A CLOSE BOND BUT BY THE END OF SUMMER THINGS STARTED TO CHANGE AND THEIR FRIENDSHIP SLOWELY DRIFTED AWAY(THAT WAS SO SAD)I ESPECIALLY THOUGHT ANNA SIMPSON(JOYCELYN) GAVE AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE....I HIGHLEY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Really makes you feel for these girls, September 5, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Our Song [VHS] (VHS Tape)
OUR SONG is wonderful in that it really gets into the lives of the three high school girls who are its main focus. It's almost in a documentary style. Very real. You know these girls, or you know someone just like them. I was one of these girls when I was in high school. They could've been my best pals. It's about being on the cusp of womanhood, and what you're going to do about it. Decisions, decisions! Oh the angst of being old enough to do whatever adults do but too young to have the wisdom to deal with the consequences. Should be required viewing for all teenaged girls. Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, July 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Song (DVD)
The first ten or fifteen minutes of this movie, I admit, it seemed like it was struggling to find its footing. But maybe it was just taking a while for me to get used to its unconventional dialogue and storytelling methods. But as the film moved on the storylines became increasingly captivating. The viewer who said that s/he couldn't figure out what the plot was was just expecting a conventional plot in a movie that's more about characters and their lives in general. Reality doesn't have plots in the sense movies do, unless you neglect large portions of it to strip down to one bare, linear story. OUR SONG is filled with the details and minutiae of the character's lives, and multiple subplots are fused into one film.

For the majority of the movie I thought the characters Joy and Lani were much stronger than Maria, though by the end of the movie Maria's character was very developed and she was just as strong as the other two.

This movie reminded me frequently of the best movies of Robert Altman, such as Nashville and Short Cuts
