1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage bootleg-style reprint of a truly amazing text. December 4, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Upon receiving this book I could immediately tell it was some sort of abridged version. The original text contains 20 chapters - this one contains only 17. Wish I had noticed the page count before ordering, as this book is 180 pages of large print, all other available editions are over 500 pages. There is no publisher listed, the summary on the back of the book (listed above as the book description) is complete nonsense and doesn't apply to this text at all, and the last page bears a mark reading only "Made in the USA/Lexington, KY/01 December 2013". What sort of frankenbook is this? Where did it come from? I'm pretty sure this is another shining example of how the internet is slowly making us all dumber. AND, when I went to file a return, Amazon kindly informed me that this book is only eligible for a replacement - I can't get my money back to spend on a reputable printing. Spend the extra bucks for a legitimate copy of this treasure - Amazon, you're ruining everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am on a quest to learn more of this interesting man. October 13, 2012

Our Southern Highlanders by Horace Kephart

If not for my husband, I would have never read this book, perhaps would have never heard of Horace Kephart. The book was very well written and gives us a history of the people who lived (mostly the Scots-Irish, and many still do, in the mountains of our Southern Highlands, mostly the great Smokey Mountains. I now know where some of the words I use come from. I learned so much about the man that I would have never known if Mr. Kephart had not taken the time to live in amongst the mountain people for a long time taking precise notes and putting them in a book for us. He was a profound and interesting man.

We have visited the regions where he lived and worked. We have visited the museum that exhibited his camping equipment, his grave site, attended the reception for his 150th birthday at Western Carolina University, met many members of his family, and saw the first play about him, written by his granddaughter.

My husband and I highly recommend reading this masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic January 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having lived in the mountains of n.c. for over 20 years, this was like going back to those majestic hills. This was beautifully and accurately written. A touching tribute to our Southern Highlanders. A book every American should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading, highly recommend December 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had heard of this book and positive commens, but never knew why until I started reading it. Living in the area described by the book, I can state that is is most factual. If you have ever wondered what is so unique about the people of the area, this book is for you. The author makes you feel that you are actually back in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings Back Old Memories April 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was raised in the southern highlands of Tennessee. This book brings me back to the days of my youth and how things and people were then. I still hear the echos of how people spoke then and the phrases they rountinely used. This book captures the people and the country they lived in before most of it was gone with the wind. No rugged or more hospitalable people ever lived and they were keeping alive centuries old traditions. It is good Mr. Kephart has set down in print what never more will be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting July 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was written a long time ago but is interesting for someone who grew up in Appalachia. It gives perspective on how traditions are handed down from these mountain people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of Mountaineers and Moonshine July 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In his lively yet entertaining way, Horace Kephart writes about his experiences living among the "mountain folks" just after the turn of the century. His ability to appreciate the people and their unique culture that existed in Appalachia shines throughout "Our Southern Highlanders" while at the same time he acknowledges and expounds upon the darker side of life in a hard and isolated region. I look forward to reading more of Kephart's works!

This was obviously not written by an American author. Sometimes the wording became too over-dramatic.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book
The subject matter is very interesting, in and of itself. But to me, what makes this a special book is the perfect writing of Horace Kephart.

Nice look back at a part of US history I think too many of us know nothing about. Also interesting to read the vernacular of the period this was written in.
