A Song That Somehow Doesn't Work,
By
This review is from: Our Time Now (MP3 Download)
Plain White T's have now become the face of real pop/punk today. First it was one of the best in the genre with Yellowcard's Ocean Avenue, then Fall Out Boy did some stuff before selling out to do other stuff out of the genre. Now, with a surprise #1, better than any pop/punk artist has done, EVER, Plain White T's follow it up with this. What happens? The public sees Plain White T's, and buys it. However, this is far from a good song. Don't get me wrong, I love pop/punk. It's one of the best genres out there today, and it's unfair how people diss it, and give #1's to crap hip-hop. But I digress...
The first thing a pop/punk song must do is rock. Check. Although it's a little slow in the verses, it takes off in the chorus in true pop/punk fashion. Secondly, the song must be catchy. This one is tricky, because only after I listened to the song five times in a row, did the chorus stick in my head. And even then, I could tell you many lyrics. Thirdly, the song must be fun. Big check here. The song is a great party song for teens... and teens alike. However, with all these great elements, I felt something was missing. I would compare this song to American Idol season 7. You have all these great parts, and in theory, they should go great together, and mesh well. But, something feels out of place, and something just doesn't seem to work, but you don't know what it is. Frustrating? Yes. It drives me mad, WHAT'S NOT WORKING HERE????? Overall, the chorus is great, the verses are weak, the song is minorly catchy, very fun party music, and it knows how to rock when it wants to. However, something mysterious keeps it from being a great song. Maybe it's the fact that artists like New Found Glory and Yellowcard just blow these guys away. Not to say the T's are bad, they're just not great.
