5.0 out of 5 stars It's a crime that these guys are unknown in the USA, February 10, 2000

But you can find out for yourself how good they are thanks to this CD.

Deacon Blue is a blend of influences and sounds from the late 80s. Their songs are original, but you'll be asking yourself, "why is this familiar?" The reason is this: you'll hear traces of Van Morrison, John Waite, Bill Medley, Bruce Springsteen, even U2. Much of it has a pinch of R&B to it as well. Ricky Ross, the lead singer, has a powerful, expressive voice - add to that the powerful, almost etheral harmonizing of Lorraine MacIntosh (sp), and you have yourself quite a package.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC POP/ROCK, May 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Town - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Hailing from glasgow, scotland deacon blue became massive in the uk from 1988 to 94, having a string of hits and a couple of no 1s they were constantly in the charts, and to this day can still be heard on the radio. 'our town' is a perfect start for newcomers and those who want more should check out there debut 'raintown' and also there second album 'when the world knows your name'. if you love great pop/rock music and havent yet heard the fantastic harmony's of ricky ross and loraine mcintosh 'buy now' and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised, and then fall in love?

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, January 17, 2002

What country, nay What planet have I been living on that doesn't embrace this band with open arms? I have not been so moved by a group since I first heard The Blue Nile in the late 80s. Somehow all these years I've missed the joy that is Deacon Blue. Many sincere thanks go out to Danny and Nick (you know who you are) for introducing me to this band. And to Deacon Blue -- thank you and please, please make us some more . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars The Other Prefab Sprout, October 23, 2005
This review is from: Our Town - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Terrific Scottish Pop that draws similarites to The Big Dish and Prefab Sprout, especially with backup singer Lorraine McIntosh in the mix.

"Queen of the New Year" could be the best Prefab Sprout song that band never recorded. "Chocolate Girl" is another winner as is "Twist and Shout" (my personal favorite) and the lively "Real Gone Kid" and "Fergus Sings the Blues".

Really, one of the better greatest hits releases that deserves to be heard from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Try This !!, December 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Our Town - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I think it is very unfortunate that you can buy very few Deacon Blue through on-line. But once you try this, you can understand their value. There are variety of songs, but still there is consistency, little sad, but more encouraging. By the way, their live performances are marvelous, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can only have one Deacon Blue album, make it this one, December 9, 1998
This review is from: Our Town - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Whenever I'm in the UK (or have a friend going over), the order of the day is always to search every music store for Deacon Blue. The latest effort turned up _Our Town_ and it's been in my CD player, computer, and Discman practically ever since. I sing "Loaded" in the shower. I hum "Chocolate Girl" on the bus. Lorriane MacIntosh's vocals on "Cover From the Sky" are hauntingly beautiful and Ricky Ross' lyrics throughout the compilation evoke both emotion and image like no other.

Unlike many bands, Deacon Blue doesn't seem to have fallen into the trap of Subject; repeating topic from song to song. _Our Town_, as a sampling of their work from _Raintown_ onwards, speaks to all the traditional things: Love, Regret, and Hope; then takes it down a notch to address life on a more personal level with old favorites such as "Dignity" and "Twist and Shout" (not a Beatles cover)--both glimpses into one man's world.

It's rare, I think, to find music that truly suits every mood. I have always found this to be the case with Deacon Blue. This collection of their work is the epitome of what "greatest hits" anthologies should be about: spanning the career, demonstrating diversity, telling stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great discovery!, November 24, 1999
This review is from: Our Town - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I heard the song "Dignity"while listening to Manx Radio on-line and asked a friend in the UK if he knew who the band was. He gave me a list of CDs to check out, a bit of history on the band and I decided to buy "Our Town". If it were vinyl I would have worn it out by now!
