A Great Movie,

I love this movie! This is the story of a teen-aged girl whose world turns upside down on the night of her eighteenth birthday when she learns that she's an adopted child. A great cast, great script, great everything. Besides the storyline, this film is a piece of Americana history as the MacCauley Family is straight from 1950 when families were first experiencing owning a television set. It was great news when they finally released this on home video. This film should have walked away with some Oscars.

Excellent movie about adoption and its problems,

For those of us who were young people in 1950, this story about a family in California is very authentic in almost every detail. Jane Wyatt is perfect as the mother struggling with the pros and cons of revealing that her eldest daughter Gail is adopted, a rare situation in 1950 America. When the middle daughter finds out and reveals the adoption to her step-sister out of spite, a chain of events are unleashed that could have been disasterous were it not for the strong bond and love and devotion the parents inculcated in all three daughters. In the end, this movie demonstrates that adopted children thrive when the adopted parents consider the child 'their very own.' Superb movie in every respect and should be required viewing for adopted children and those considering being adoptive parents.

Since i was a child at my grandparents house, every holiday my sisters and I would crowd around the television and watch this movie, and it never ceased to make us laugh and cry. It is special to all of us and always brings us closer together.

"I guess families are an awful pain in the neck sometimes, but there is a lot to be said for them.",
This review is from: Our Very Own [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Gail Macaulay (Ann Blyth) has it all. She's beautiful, she has a loving family, a faithful boyfriend (Farley Granger), and is about to graduate from high school. She has her fair share of problems, like her ambitious little sister Joan (Joan Evans) who tries to horn in on her boyfriend. However, their mother (Jane Wyatt) seems to keep her in line pretty well, that is until Joan learns a family secret and blurts it out to Gail in an arguement. Gail was adopted. The news turns her life upside down and has her questioning her perfect life and pushing the people that love her away.
An interesting and unusual story, Our Very Own features all of the corniness of family dramas but with an edge. Unlike many films of the era, the story focuses mainly on a teenaged girl. There are scenes at school, a big birthday party that combines family and teenage romance, and a lovely date on the beach. Also telling of the times is the opener where the family gathers excitedly around their new tv set. The acting is supurb on all sides, and no wonder with such an all star cast. Natalie Wood also appears as Gail's youngest sister and Ann Dvorak plays her biological mother.

Every time I stumble onto Farley Granger's name I remember this wonderful movie although his part is quite small in it. As a teenager growing up in the 50's "Our Very Own" made a profound impression on me.
I wait eagerly for it to come out in DVD.

I can't seem to get enough of this movie. Every time I see it I wonder what happened to these people! It was such a great cast and the tension between the older sisters is so real. I'm glad other people have the same emotion about it.

I cannot fathom why this lovely film has not been released on DVD as of yet. Perhaps if enough of us mention it in a review, it will happen!! Ann Blyth is such a poop in Mildred Pierce- yet such a lovely gentle young woman in this film, it just confirms how underated her performances were. Yes - Yes, it's a "chick flick" but soooo worth it. You cheer for her, cry for her and beam with pride for her by the end of the film. Very delightful performances by the entire cast.

What a wonderful movie!
My mom and I enjoyed watching this movie all over again after not seeing it in years! My best friend in California was adopted and I can remember asking my mom what that meant because I had never known anyone who was adopted. She explained it beautifully just like Jane Wyatt did in this movie. I laugh about it now, but I can remember at 10 thinking that adoption meant my best friend was more special and more loved than I was because she was "picked". Thank God for wonderful movies like this one!!! I only wish it was on DVD and cheaper to purchase. I would love for my three daughters to watch it with me now.
