Book Description

October 6, 2003
This book relates the personal stories of 18 mothers who have lost adult children to accident, suicide, murder, and major illness. The stories trace the similarities and the levels of grief and bereavement over a time frame of from four months to thirty-five years. The mothers range from 30 to 85 years of age. The lost children were from 16 through 45 years of age. From the responses to a common list of questions asked of over 75 survivor mothers, stories were selected and transcribed. The questions focused on changes in the grief and bereavement process over time. The stories serve as a framework for a review of prevailing theories of grief and bereavement. The book was initiated for a variety of reasons: to offer a sense of camaraderie and hope to other bereaved parents, to re-frame the losses as continuing relationships, to provide tools of understanding to professionals and friends who work with bereaved parents, and to memorialize the lost children.

Excellent, easy reading resource for those like myself who have lost adult children. Explores the feelings of Mothers who lost children in the last 3-4 months up to 35 years. Let's me know that my feelings are normal and justified. The loss of a 22 year old Son is something you can never get over which was made clear in this book. But, we do go on and can live rich and fulfilling lives. By the grace of God, our coping skills must come out in full force during these times. Definately, recommend this book for others who are grieving their children.

A necessary book to read November 28, 2007

Very few books are written, which deal with the loss of Adult Children. I found this book to be a godsend. Even though it has been 5 years since the death of my son, this book filled me with the realization that I am normal, and that everything I have experienced and probably will in the future, I share with all these women who allowed themselves to be interviewed. I only hope they do a sequel or a follow-up.
