3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By C. Getsinger on February 23, 2006
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book since it was used in 2nd grade at my daughter's new school. I wanted her to know what the other kids at school learned, and this book is easy to follow. The design utilizes colorful, attractive use of page divisions and a larger font, which provides mental and visual breaks while reading the interesting historic facts, thus retaining student interest in the subject.

There are many original historic photos and paintings, a few creative graphs, and some maps. The format is appropriate for age 7-8, including simple definitions with phonetic spellings to help kids sound out words correctly. There are four units: History, Geography, Economics and Civics. Topics include Egypt, China, early Virginians (native Americans), and the typical famous Americans like Washington, Lincoln, S.B. Anthony, H. Keller, Jackie Robinson and Jesse Jackson.

The book stresses our diversity in America and that Americans all have different backgrounds and skin color. I appreciate the pages suggesting how to be a good citizen (recycling, trustworthiness, and willingness to help in the community).
