5.0 out of 5 stars Almost real: Like a Visit with my Finnish Ancestors, August 27, 2001
This review is from: Our daily bread: A novel (Paperback)
It is as good as it gets, like a visit with my grandparents' cousins and their children, who did not emigrate to America, but stayed in rural pre-war Finland. I get a lively view of how they lived through the depression. The sauna, placed at the center of this culture and shown in regular use, was a clever invention arising from combination of a cold climate, a very clean house, with men working very dirty jobs. The question of a cuisine did not arise with people who were obliged and able to make bread with pine bark filler. Loggers, kids on skis snaring rabbits, reindeer herders, church Finns versus the unbelievers, courting couples, widows with children are all detailed, along with the world they live in. He is honest in a way I would find extremely difficult about both strengths and weaknesses in the very real characters peopling this Finnish wilderness. I can't wait to read the sequel.
