About the Author

Bisco Hatori made her manga debut with Isshun kan no Romance (A Moment of Romance) in LaLa DX magazine. The comedy Ouran High School Host Club is her breakout hit. When she's stuck thinking up characters' names, she gets inspired by loud, upbeat music (her radio is set to NACK5 FM). She enjoys reading all kinds of manga, but she's especially fond of the sci-fi drama Please Save My Earth and Slam Dunk, a basketball classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sibling rivalry, unshaven tranny and more!, November 24, 2010
This review is from: Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 7 (Paperback)
The Ouran High School Host Club has a new mission. In order to better understand Haruhi, they are determined to experience the culture of the common folk firsthand. To that end they have kidnapped Vice President Kyoya against his will, brought him to a regional products exhibition, and then abandoned him as we begin the 7th volume the Bisco Hatori series. Kyoya is less than pleased to find himself there, once he wakes, minus his wallet and cell phone. Good fortune brings Haruhi his way, and he importunes her to buy him some food. Spending time with Kyoya, Haruhi discovers similarities between him and Tamaki, which of course Kyoya denies. When he stops a crooked shopowner from fleecing a customer, he impugns the generous motives she ascribes to him, but Haruhi claims to know better - she knows why he did it. Their discussion is cut short by a missing child announcement which blares over the PA system - one which matches Kyoya's description!

It turns out that Hunny has a younger brother who attends the Middle School, Chika, who is captain of the Karate Club. As soon as Chika spies Hunny, outside the door of the Host Club, the fight is on! Apparently that is common with this family - every time they meet, they engage in battle! Haruhi is disturbed at this display of sibling rivalry, although the rest of the Host Club takes it in stride. Mori has a younger brother too, who belongs to the Kendo Club, as well as the Karate Club. The twins take Haruhi aside to explain to her the story of the two Haninozuka brothers, and why they are such rivals. Things come to a head, and a deciding match is arranged between them - if Hunny wins, he stays the way he is, if Chika prevails, then Hunny will cut down on his sweets intake.

When the Host Club pays an early morning call upon Haruhi, catching Ranka in his natural pre-shaven state, they learn to their dismay that they have been foiled in ther purpose - the ladies from the Roberia Institute have already snagged her! This bears close investigation! From outside the walls of the girls' school, they hear Haruhi's screams, and they must find a way to gain entry! Meanwhile, Haruhi has been impressed into the girls' service for their Nadeshiko Day festivities. Their lead actress is in traction, and without Haruhi's help, they will be forced to cancel it all! Can the boys rescue her from this den of inquitous femininity?

An extra episode at the end of the volume offers a behind the scene look at the Hitachin twins in their younger days, and the story of the one nanny that they actually liked.

Another good volume of Host Club! I especially enjoyed the foray into the Roberia Institute, and the lengths that the boys went to in order to "save" Haruhi. I especially enjoyed Ranka - for the first time I did not intensely dislike him, I felt like he was more of a real character than a caricature of a transvestite. The boys antics inside the Institute really had me laughing! The revelation of what was behind the whole plot to begin with is simply priceless! I also enjoyed the episode with the young twins, it was very funny and gives us a better understanding of these boys' make-up, and what influences have gone into the formation of their characters. After seven volumes, it's safe to say that Ouran High School Host Club is no one trick pony - it has humor and depth, cute boys and a lot of fun! The mangaka works hard on character development, and although Haruhi and Tamaki are the main pairing, she does not neglect the rest of the club. Her artwork is wonderful. I enjoyed this volume's cover, which features Haruhi and the twins in old fashioned dress. This series is a definite keeper!

The Ouran High School Host Club manga, I'm pleased to say, is as wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny as the anime. I'm eagerly collecting the volumes as they are published in English now, and though some storyline details have been changed slightly, I recognize plot lines that were used in anime episodes that I have watched. I love this series. <3 If you like comedy and parodies of cliches and you haven't tried this already, you should!
