OURSELVES OR NOTHING will haunt you. Here, we'll examine the dark divide between dreams and reality: The stench of rotting corpses in Rwanda is an eye-opener, while CNN's coverage of 9/11 can lull you into a dreamlike numbness... and that's when Hemmingson slams you with some deeply philosophical questions. I found myself savoring lines such as: "[We were] mesmerized by the shooting stars exploding like the night skies of war-torn Bosnia or Afghanistan," and "Alone, I entered the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, dark and wet and strange near the River Meuse, here I expected a new vision, I expected change, this land of towering trees would be my cocoon. I should have known better. You don't get what you chase." OURSELVES OR NOTHING will likely etch a pornographic afterimage of violence onto your imagination that will remain for some time. Read deeply.

Too often is poetry thought to be inaccessible, dry, and boring. While this is the case for a large portion of the poetry produced today (see MFA programs, literary journals), this is not the case for Michael Hemmingson's OURSELVES OR NOTHING. This is poetry you should be reading. Tender, lively, haunting - these poems will enter you and stay.
