5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, unique survey, November 29, 2006

I bought this book for twenty bucks when I was a starving art student at SAIC ten years ago, mainly for its coverage of the Gutai group and the Viennese actionists.
This book covers mainly action-based painters, sculptures, and photographers, so be warned it's not so useful as a general survey of performance art. I seem to recall it left out John Cage but included Nam June Paik, R.I.P.
It's huge, heavy, and full of great photographs-- not only of the actions themselves but also the resulting paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Images by Arnulf Rainer, Shwartzkogler, that Gutai dude that jumps through paper and the other one that fights mud stand out in my mind.
