5.0 out of 5 stars Best of John Barry's movie scores

2.0 out of 5 stars Agree. Not as good as the original.
Every soundtrack sounds like the previous one because of slow, ponderous, heavy, sterile, dry interpretation of the themes. One just expects some brightness in the playing but this is never delivered. This recording "tries" to have a story. Stick to the original soundtrack. 1000 times more enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of John Barry's movie scores, October 29, 1999

Out of Africa is the finest and most memorable of Barry's scores, wonderfully unusual, not like other soundtracks that are takeoffs on famous or obscure classical music. Delicate and bold, it is the perfect companion to the film, but even if you haven't seen the film, this soundtrack can be captivating. The beauty of the music can only be rivaled by the natural beauty of the African continent. This is a more complete version of the original soundtrack album, including a number of themes that were not on the original. The original, however, seemed livelier, while this version, since it is 20-bit digital, has a purer, more lyrical and even lonely sound. If you are a fan of the film or it's soundtrack, it is worth having both versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not like the original, November 1, 2001

The idea of listening a new recording of John Barry's memorable Out of Africa is to say the least interesting. So, I prefered to listen to the new recording without listening the original one before. Just to see the difference. Well, even from the first track you can see the difference and you miss instatly the original recording. It is not a bad album. Not at all, but it lacks the smoothness and the feeling of the original album. The sound seems more "metalic" and lacks the passion of the original. Still it's a way to appreciate once more the fantastic work of John Barry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but something is missing...., November 3, 2003

The tracks to this album is absolutely wonderful, and although I have not bought the original album yet, I am familiar with the main theme. This album is not bad, but something is missing...I agree with the other reviews that it does kind of lack that intimate feeling when compared to the original soundtrack...maybe it's due to some of the track being so short! (48 seconds)

5.0 out of 5 stars Seven Minutes Makes Little Difference, March 27, 2005

"Out Of Africa" was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Sound and Original Score. This recording by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is nearly identical to the 12 song `official' soundtrack. However, there is an additional seven minutes of music, including the complete Adagio from the Mozart clarinet concerto and some miscellaneous traditional music that was omitted from the film. The sweeping drama is still here and I see little difference between the Original and this recording other than seven minutes. It's a toss-up, but each one will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet Background to a Stunning Story, July 19, 2002

This soundtrack is a wonderfully symphonic background to the storyline of this film. I have found it to be both a quieting and pensive demonstration of passionate music.

It's classical in style, and quiet in content. A wonderful refuge from so much of today's clanging sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music's beautiful on its own, but even better if you've seen the movie, February 22, 2008
By
This review is from: Out of Africa (Score) (Audio CD)
The main theme from OUT OF AFRICA is so beautiful that it gives me chills every time I hear it. It's great on its own, but even better placed in the context of the film it's from. In the movie, the main theme is played as the characters are flying in a small airplane, and when I listen to it, I can't help but picture myself in the air, w/ the wind blowing on my face...I feel like I'm soaring, as the strings well up in the piece...I LOVE it!!

What I look for, when I'm considering whether it's worth buying a CD, is whether I can listen to it straight through from beginning to end...this one more than makes the mark, and I would even say that it's over too quickly.

It's evocative music, and you could just close your eyes and enjoy it. One of the best movie soundtracks I've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded My Expectations, January 1, 2012

I saw "Out of Africa" years ago when it first came out on the silver screen. I have always loved the movie and the musical score, produced by John Barry. As with others like "Somewhere In Time" his music is a classic, something I enjoy listening to over and over. The sound on this CD is wonderful.

We heard this CD in a bed and breakfast we stayed at Urbanna, Virginia. I knew we had to have it for those quiet and relaxing times. The music quality is outstanding and I cannot say enough good about the overall sounds/production.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best duet left off CD, is on closing score on cassette., March 14, 2009

Why do they delete a truly beautiful end song duet about love lost and when meeting already sense that it is not to be. On the cassette the duet is a really a beautiful piece of music. I have had the cassette copied onto a CD which has enhanced the total score and the beautiful end song. Every Out of Africa that I have checked on Amazon lacks this closing duet. What a shame!
