Only him can do it...,
By Ivan Vasconcelos (Golden, CO United States) - See all my reviews

Liam's absolutely impecable expression makes his playing an audible version of a masterpiece painting... The Foxchase is one of the best examples I've ever heard of powerfully descriptive music(even to the barking of the dogs)!! Liam's fingering is crispy clean, his chanters' tones are both bright and smooth. But again, in any tune, his deep understanding of piping music makes his phrasing very unique: relaxed, uplifting and dramatic! The musical diversity of this album makes it my favourite of all of his work...It would simply be my first suggestion to anybody who seeks true piping music.

Those sonorous tones,
By Sean O'Cionnaith (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Anything from Liam O'Flynn, after his gilded years with Planxty, is treated with the reverence due to a master musician. This being the case the purchase of his 'Out to an Other side' will make all uileann pipes' fans lick their lips, tap their feet, throw the chair to one side, and their hands in the air. Though you have to wait til the penultimate track before being hit by a hornpipe, along the way you'll find a spirited Foxchase, a paen for Aughrim's Great Disaster (the end of Gaelic Ireland), and the elegance of Lady Dillon. The eery resonance of the drones, the enchantment of the chanters... how is it that the vehicle of such melancholy holds the power to pipe the pumping heart to an interior frenzy? Don't ask me, but Liam might tell you. Out in 1994, this dish completes the musical menu to which the maestro is still adding. Seamless, apart slight lull in the middle section. Without a dud. Pointing to his perfection. Buy it.

a beautiful compilation of traditional irish music. bought specifically for the exquisite vocals of Liam O'Maonlai on track #8 (Ar Bruach Na Laoi) which is both masterful and soulful.

Only worth your time for "Gynt at the Gate". Extraordinary, spirited piece that I listen to repeatedly(thanks Fiona R!)
The rest is either of marginal interest or completely dismissible. |
