Book Description

October 10, 2000
This book is the culmination of more than forty years of rowing and coaching on the collegiate, national and international levels. The author's experience on the University of Pennsylvania Lightweight Crew during the 1960s leaves him with more questions than answers, about boats and about life, and those questions propel him on a homeric odyssey in search of inner peace and perfect rowing technique. This epic journey is full of peaks and valleys, occasionally tragic, often hilarious. The discoveries he makes along the way, the truths he shares at its end, will surprise, perplex and challenge rowers and nonrowers alike. This book is at once a fond reminiscence and a thought-provoking treatise on the metaphysics of life and of moving racing shells through water.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Colorful rowing sequences . . . in search of inner peace . . . an amusing memoir of life's journey to enlightenment. -- USRowing Magazine, November 2000

From the Inside Flap

"Something new and very different has joined the pantheon of rowing literature: Peter Mallory's An Out-of-Boat Experience. Pete has distilled a lifetime's worth of rowing experience - as competitor, coach, observer and muse - into a very readable, very interesting treatise on this obsession that continues to capture our hearts and minds. Read on, and then go for a good, hard row." - Brad Alan Lewis, Olympic Gold Medalist and author of Assault on Lake Casitas

"Peter, you've been on a quest, and it happens to be a quest that we both share. I personally find your book enormously compelling, and the language you use has added depth and perspective to my own understanding of boat moving. Your descriptions are accurate, on track, and I admire what you've done. I strongly recommend this book to every rower and coach." - Steve Gladstone, University of California, 1999-2001 U.S. Collegiate Champion Coach

"You know me. When in doubt, get a bigger hammer. But if you want to be smart and try to figure out how to use the hammer properly, take a look at Peter Mallory's An Out-of-Boat Experience. Wind your way through this book of discovery, and see if you agree with where Peter's journey has taken him. Is he right? I don't know, but I'm going to have some fun working it out, and even if he's wrong, I'll learn something along the way. Maybe this old dog can learn a new trick." -Tiff Wood, 1983 World Rowing Bronze Medalist, protagonist in The Amateurs by David Halberstam

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenge preconceived theories about efficient oarsmanship, January 7, 2002

This review is from: An Out-of-Boat Experience (Paperback)
Peter's book is a must read for any rower or coach who really strives to make a fast boat. His "concurrent" style is the method that the best crews use whether they realize it or not.....I have read the last several chapters over and over again and they have significantly improved my erg scores.....I can't wait to get back on the water.....Gladstone, Lewis, etc. all agree with and apply his techniques...not bad company....Thank you Peter...

5.0 out of 5 stars The key to lightweight rowing, December 19, 2005
This review is from: An Out-of-Boat Experience (Paperback)
You have to be a rower (preferably lightweight) to fully appreciate this book. Peter Mallory pushes the boundries of the conventional rowing technique. His lightweights regularly beat heavyweights using concepts like catching quickly, connection and minimizing extraneous motion. He is a rowing inspiration.
