Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-There is no shortage of well-written, interesting discussions of psychic phenomena, even for young readers. This brief series entry recounts out-of-body experiences (OBEs) of Biblical characters and of well-known figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, and Charles Lindbergh, in addition to those of several ordinary people. One chapter is devoted to personal descriptions of some fascinating near-death experiences (NDEs). Suggestions for ways to meditate in the hope of achieving astral projection are included, as is the address of the American Society for Psychic Research to contact in case of success. It is pointed out that OBEs cannot be readily duplicated under controlled conditions and that mentally ill people often describe the same sorts of visions as people claiming to have had NDEs. Yet the historical record and continuing reports of these types of experiences raise intriguing questions about a strictly scientific view of them. The one treatment closest in attitude to this work is Thomas Schouweiler's Life After Death (Greenhaven, 1990). That title's balanced discussion of various ideas people have held about the nature of death and what follows it is lengthier than Green and Sanford's book and a natural sequel to it.
