Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is the story of the worst thing that can possibly happen to you. It would be too shattering to read were it not also the story of the best thing that could ever happen to anyone. OUT OF THE CANYON serves as evidence that life sometimes hides the most precious gift inside the very heart of darkness.”
–Augusten Burroughs

"[An] intensely affecting first memoir....A powerful account of our ability to recover from emotional devastation and love again, this book will appeal to anyone who has experienced personal tragedy, those who can appreciate finding a life partner under unexpected circumstances, and those who don't mind a good cry."
Library Journal

"OUT OF THE CANYON tells the Dailys' infinitely sad, improbably uplifting story. The book is one thing - a well-told account of a brave, unlikely recovery from the unthinkable. But stronger than words are the Dailys themselves; simply being in their presence — compassionate and humble — is like being surrounded by an enormous grace. It is the convincing exclamation point on their book."
Aspen Times

“How can a book about unspeakable tragedy be uplifting and joyful? Allison and Art Daily’s story manages to be that and more. It offers hope to all of us who grieve and stands as a tribute to the human spirit and the possibilities that exist even when we feel that there are none. Out of the Canyon shows us hope, inspiration, love, and yes, even joy.”
–Ann Hood, author of Comfort

“Out of the Canyon is a riveting and powerful witness to the healing power of love and spirit over the worst, most unimaginable loss. It both shatters your heart and deeply heals it all at once. Reading it will be a profound gift to all who have ever lost a loved one, or may.”
–Sonia Choquette, author of The Answer Is Simple and Trust Your Vibes

This is a book that touches to the soul. Art and Allison's story exemplifies that not only grief and sadness but also deep healing and growth can come out of unimaginable tragedy. And that the process is about feelings and tears and love and anger and honesty and love and not knowing how to be and wondering how to go on and love and letting friends in and letting them see you and love. It is about being human in the face of unspeakable grief. And it is about love.

I cannot recommend a book more highly than I do this one. It is a book that will tear at your heart and elevate your spirit. For anyone who is dealing with their own humanness - read this book and celebrate life!

I love this book. As a talk radio host it's my "job" to be prepared and do the "research". This amazing book had me (as well as my family) in the palm of its hand. We cried, we laughed and we glowed all along the way. My two children begged me to read more. By the end of the story I had a sense of peace, inspiration and awe over the beauty of the depth of grief, love and community. Perfect for anyone who is going through a loss, has gone through a loss, and wants to be inspired through the grief of death. Yes...perfect for nearly everyone. Oprah where are you, on this one!

I bought this booke because I was going through deep grieving and deep depression because of several losses I had endured in a short amount of time and had not had a chance to completely come to terms with. This booke is about one man who loses his wife and two young boys in a dreadful car accident and how he journeys through his grief and comes to terms with it. And is able to begin to live a new life, with a woman who has suffered through her own grief and despair and is able to help him, while honouring still the lives of his *lost* loved ones. This is their story. OUT OF THE CANYON helped me tremendously to deal with my own grief and despair.

If you are having difficulty working through your own grief and believe that reading something will help you, I do recommend this booke. It has helped me, I believe it will help you as well.

Either you'll love this book (if you believe everything the authors say) or question the
speed and "recovery" of two lonely (her) and heartbroken souls (him) over tragic life events
who find each other (she pursues him) and convince each other, through their tears, that
they belong together. So they marry, relatively quickly after their losses, have 2 kids and. . .who knows? Live happily ever after through the tears. . .?

Kathy Daily was one of the best friends I ever had. To say that she had a heart of gold while maintaining the ability to be totally honest is, I think, an understatement. The book mentions a Musician's life that she was probably responsible for saving but I can assure you that there were many others...
Having spent time with Art and Kathy it is no surprise to me that Art would create such a loving, moving and healing tribute to his lost family. What is a surprise is that he would find a person like Allison who, most assuredly, was a gift from the Angels. The loss of her brother Rod helped shape her into the miraculous person that she has become. Allison's compassion, empathy, and unconditional love is central to the many messages in this book.
Even if you have not experieced the loss of a loved one, this book will touch your heart in ways unimaginable. If you or someone you know is experiencing the loss of a loved one this book will be integral to the healing process. Buy it, your only regret will be if you don't.

I know this family personally and this book is an amazing story of how love triumphs over all. A man lost his wife and children suddenly in a tragic car accident and walked away untouched. His daughter from his first marriage (Piper, my oldest best friend), as well as the town of Aspen, carried him through the first days and months of grief, and then he met an unbeleivable woman who became his wife. Allison supported him through the loss and helped him stay above water every day. She too has experienced loss, so they connect and support each other through a terribly tough time... and through it all they fell in love and created a new family. This book will make you count your blessings and understand that death is a part of the natural process, and that we must move on for our loved ones and live every day to the fullest. This is a story that EVERYONE should read, whether you've experienced loss or not. It is a FEEL GOOD, CAN'T PUT IT DOWN, AWESOME BOOK!!!
