5.0 out of 5 stars you know where you are? you're in the jungle baby! er, i mean high school..., May 17, 2007
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
this is a hilarious novel about those crazy first months of high school, when you're a scared freshman and don't know what the hell is going on. we get to watch two best friends navigate that tricky time together and see how their friendship suddenly falls apart when they find themselves chasing after different things. and once they end up on opposite sides, look out! the gloves totally come off...

i can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series - claudia gabel brings the fun, the embarassment, the humor and, most of all, brings the pain in this novel about everything that makes high school so exciting/mortifying/memorable! this is seriously hot stuff (and smart too!). i just wish i was as cool as this sawyer kid (you've gotta read the book to know what im talking about!).

anyway, pick up this book! i promise you that you're gonna be hooked...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for girls, October 5, 2008
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
Nola James and Marnie Fizpatrick have been best friends since kindergarten. This year was going to be different. They were going to be in high school. And now they have learned that in high school you're either IN or OUT. Marnie is outgoing and bold. Nola is quiet and shy. They are very different. Marnie goes to the spa, while Nola goes to the library. Marnie makes some new friends that are the most popular kids in the freshman class. Nola makes friends with the quieter, smarter, and weirder people. Then Marnie starts to leave Nola for Lizette Levin, the head of the group. Lizette does not like Nola and tries to keep Marnie away from her. She keeps bailing out on Nola. Nola gets really upset and wonders if she really knows Marnie as well as she thought she did. Is Marnie In, Is Nola Out? I recommend this book to girls that enjoy reading conflict stories and school stories

5.0 out of 5 stars In or Out, February 22, 2008
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
In or Out by CLaudia Gabel is a heart grabbing book, which involves real problems between teenaged girls. Girls talk behind each others back, sabotage each other, and ruin each other friendships,(and it's not right at all in my opinoin.) 5-star book for it's realistic format, and heart-touching words. Any person who enjoyed The Clique series or Gossip Girl series will definetly enjoy In or Out. Lets just say that Nola and Marnie have a big journey full of surprise ahead of them. Two girls entering high school with a promise thinkin high school won't destroy it. Both girls fall for different guys, but only one befriends the populars. This book is a big journey for these two silly girls who are awaiting the moment they become women. This book is full of adventure and surprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Popular crowd vs. loser crowd, February 22, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
This book shows how hard high school is in the beginning. When you go to a new school, such as elemntary school to midde school or middle school to high school, sometimes you change. Well, what happens when you and the person who has been your best friend since, well forever, go completly different ways? That's what happens to Marnie and Nola. Marnie is a more confident, popular and really out there girl. On the other hand, Nola is a shy, quiet girl who never really says the right thing. The two friends have lots of desicions to make. Is their friendship really strong enough to keep them together? Nola is in the loser crowd. She didnt make a good impression on the "in" crowd and now they want nothing to do with her. However, Marnie is completly excepted in the to popular crowd. How can Marnie hang out with Nola and still be popular and hang out with her new friends? I liked this story because it is very realistic. All the situations were things that really happen everyday. They also used not only dialogue but they talked throught text messages and instant messages sometimes. I thought the story had a good plot and good characters. I disliked how it was sort of hard to follow. Sometmes i felt lost and didnt know where they were and who they were talking about. I ended up having to read some parts over again. Over all, i think it was a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can totally Relate 2 This Book!, February 20, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
I totally loved this book. I'm an only in sixth grade but this is already happening to me. My best friend, Gabby, is Marnie and I am stuck like Nola. Lizette is my enemy, Sara.

Nola James and Marnie Fitzpatrick have been best friends since forever; almost like sisters. But it's freshman year and that's all about to change. The girls were praying to be put in the same homeroom or have at least one class togethere but that didn't happen. Marnie was the cool girl and it was really effortless for her to make friends. Nola, on the other hand, was a klutz and always found some way to embarrass herself. Well, when Nola is put into homeroom with Lizette Levin, the coolest girl in school, she accidentally steps on her foot which sends her straight to the "OUT CROWD." Marnie, however, rides on her older sister's coattails straight to the "IN CROWD." Could one girl (Lizette) tear apart the best friendship both of them have ever known? She has done a good jop with that so far, but what will happen in the next book of the In or Out series, "Loves Me, Loves Me Not"?

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, August 20, 2007
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
The crucial part of high school, or of any social scene, is to fit in, to be noticed... in a good way. To not be the one that gets picked on but more like the one who everyone wants to be around. For best friends Nola and Marnie, their first day in high school as freshmen will ultimately result in whether they make it into the right crowd. But no worries, since they both promised each other that whoever gets in first will make sure the other does, too.

Unfortunately, there's only room for one of them.

Nola is the quiet one who definitely values her best friend status with Marnie and likes everything the way it is. Who needs change? Getting into the right crowd just doesn't matter, as long as she has her best friend right by her side. Being the klutz that she is, a little incident on the first day of school could make her so OUT.

Marnie, the outgoing one, has to live up to her older sister, Erin's, standards. Just saying her sister's name can easily get her noticed. But does she really want to just be known as Erin's little sister? Sure, if it can get her into the IN crowd.

Two friends, who thought they had each others' backs, will have their friendship tested, since high school can totally do that. Promises will be broken, friendships will be made, and, of course, teenage boys will make it all the more interesting.

The IN OR OUT series is the next guilty pleasure. Full of so much competition and a whole lot more drama, Claudia Gabel makes sure that we all know how dangerously scary high school can be. Nola is the one everyone will root for while Marnie is the one every girl wants to be. A quick and easy read that fans of THE CLIQUE series and MEAN GIRLS will definitely want to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars LYLAS, May 31, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
Nola and Marnie have always signed their notes and emails with LYLAS, their shorthand for Love YA Like A Sister. But when they start high school, things begin to change. You're either In or Out--one of the girls is "IN" while the other girl suffers embarrassment and is clearly "Out."

No matter how old we are, I think most everybody can relate to the feeling of being in or out. I was surprised at the ending, but it is true and heartfelt.

Good stuff. I was hooked from the first page. I look forward to the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Are you IN or OUT?, January 4, 2008
This review is from: In or Out #1 (Paperback)
What happens when two best friends go different ways in High School? That's the problem Nola and Marnie have to face in the outstanding novel IN or OUT by Claudia Gabel. These girls do everything together, until High School when they have to choose sides. Marnie wants to be this ever so popular girl because her older sister was. She wants to drag Nola with her, but her friend had an incident on the first day of school that made her completely out! Now, Nola isn't sure where she fits in. So, since Marnie and Nola have different lunch periods, Marnie decides to sit with the "popular" crowd. Nola goes the other way and sits with the not so well known people. Then, disaster strikes! Everyday, Marnie hangs out with Lizzette, the most famous girl at school. In conclusion to that, she ignores Nola. As a forgiving natured teenager, Nola doesn't think much of it. After some time, Marnie leaves Nola out of everything, including her crush. Nola starts to get very furious at Marnie. What would become of these two girls? Would their friendship be ruined forever?
I loved this piece of realistic fiction. It had situations that you would find in regular everyday life. Some parts I didn't find too wonderful. For example, there was this part where the gym teacher comes in. I didn't know why the author put it in there. Overall, the book was amazing. I would recommend this book to girls ages 12 and up. It was a strong piece of work and connected with the readers.
