Editorial Reviews

Its hard to comprehend that this largely unsung British institution has been away for so long. In fact it almost seems as if they never went away at all when you listen to this brand new release. The feelings and convictions displayed within the grooves of Out of the Coma further display the undeniable uniqueness of Comus as an artistic collective as opposed to "just another band"

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of the Coma - Into a Second Lifetime... June 20, 2012
By Bill B
The Beast returns in triumph... A timeless classic. Everyone who appreciates First Utterance will wet their pants over this masterpiece. It has three new songs (all of a most edifying length), beautifully recorded, including the title track plus The Malgaard Suite. This last is from a 1972 live concert, recorded with just a hand-held cassette recorder, the tape having languished in the outer darkness for forty years but despite the apologies in the booklet and Roger Wootton's explanation, it sounds better than many bootleg recordings of other bands and is a stunning piece... As it says in the booklet, 'soaring', 'majestic', 'a lyrical sonic fever dream'. Yes, and the rest.

The new songs show Comus have taken up where they left off First Utterance (and The Malgaard Suite) and produced this strangely beautiful and powerful work as if those forty years didn't count, and why should they? What is time anyway? Experience? Gestation of genius? This music, with its rare and darkly thrilling quality, is to die for, or even to die to.

And guess what? I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Night Was Sultry February 7, 2014
By Lazlo
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Thanks to James Morgenstern for recommending this. It's like the original 1970s "Wicker Man" house band Magnet only slightly more gypsy jazz influenced. Maybe I could also compare them to that first Process church house band Changes. But a lot of obscure comparisons aren't going to describe Comus's sound that well.

The really nuts thing about this band is the philosophical, I'd conjecture, heathen lyricism they managed to evoke in the early to mid 1970s. I'm not much of a lyric reader but it's sinking in and I'm finding it pretty in a slightly ghostly way and so is a perfect wrap-up to a youth spent drinking nougat nectar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yay! More Comus! July 4, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
Discovering this album was a wonderful surprise! I really like "First Utterance" but listening to it is always a little bittersweet because it's a unique album and I want more of it. Now I have more! But I would like more still because I am shamelessly greedy when it comes to good, creative music, so, please, Comus, keep recording! (Maybe attempt The Malgaard Suite again?)

About the album: "Out of the Coma" contains many moments in the instrumentation and vocals that link it directly to "First Utterance." There are particular phrases from, say, the violin and particular harmonies that create this link. The saxophone (a soprano sax?) is a new voice, and it lives up to the high standard for musicianship set in "First Utterance" and continued in "Out of the Coma." The band overall is as sincere and brave as ever. Yay!
