A well written book with a most interesting plot that held my attention from cover to cover. It is an insightful story of the trials and tribulations of of an "average man" attempting to make his mark in this world and not that of an "ego driven super hero". A sometime humorous, sometime exciting recount a young man's experiences in early life, his entry into Marine "Boot Camp", later into Naval Aviation training and his follow on squadron life during the early parts of the Viet Nam war with a twist of how at times things will not always work out as planned in life. It is the story of a young man's honor, integrity and character and how he applies those traits to his life. A most interesting approach is how the author intertwines the plot line between the writer and the personal journals and writings of the main character of the book. I'm looking forward to this author's next book.

I really like the way the author weaves the plot together by inserting diary entries into the story. This makes for a faster, more interesting read. Some parts are quite heartbreaking and tender; other parts are packed with action. Some of the missions really jump off the page and come to life. I was raised as a military brat, so I'm familiar with some of this content. My dad was in Vietnam, too. He wasn't a pilot and he didn't tell a lot of stories, but some of the geographical references in this book were familiar to me. I loved the part where the young man gets off the bus and is "welcomed" to boot camp. That's pretty funny. And I know it's like that, too. And the missions where there are combat scenes really come to life. The ending wasn't something I was prepared for and I didn't see it coming, which is always nice. I hate books where I can already see the ending coming. I like this book and can highly recommend it. If you're reading this review and you were in Vietnam or were/are a pilot, you will love it. If you like a little romance that doesn't go overboard, you'll like it. If you love action-packed biographies, you'll like it, too. There's something for everyone in this book!

A uniquely written reminder of military heroism in a forgotten war. It helps one remember that we must always honor those who fought and more importantly died in a war our country could and should have won. Although I was in the Navy during those years, I was never assigned to Viet Nam,but I did have contact with advanced weapons that were headed that way. I recall the reverance with which I viewed those in combat there. This book reminded me of that, and I thank the author for telling this story based on his own combat experiences.

Dear Mr. Moore, I enjoyed your book cover to cover. Good writing, engaging story, I could easily picture everything vividly. Thank you also for your service to our country, and I appreciated your personally written dedication to my father. By the way, he wrote a book about WWII which I have linked here: A Tale of Two Monuments, and a few other Tales

Took two days to read it and I had a hard time putting it down. From beginning to end it keeps you involved in the moving story of a teenager trying to find his way in life, so he chooses to join the USMC. Each stage is a challenge but he rises above the obstacles to fulfill his dream. Passed the book on to several of my veteran friends and they enjoyed it as well.

E. P. Moore's book Out of Da Nang is a well written piece of history. Although it is both factual and fiction I believe it much more factual than fiction. I have purchased three of E. P. Moore's books and given them to one Army Green Beret and two Navy pilots who flew during the same years. They agree that the book is very realistic and exciting.
