Book Description

Out of the Darkness is the second book in Jaime Rush's sexy new contemporary paranormal romance series. Rush, the author of A Perfect Darkness, tells the story of the Offspring, children of a mysterious experiment gone awry who have been blessed—and cursed—with unusual powers . . . and who are in terrible danger.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I've always loved the combination of romance and suspense. Having just one or the other doesn't do it for me. Almost all of my twenty-eight books and five novellas twist both of those elements together, because nothing complements falling in love better than being hunted down, right?

As Jaime Rush, I write romantic paranormal suspense, including the Hidden series (Humans with the essence of gods walk the knife's edge between Miami and a magical world of passion and danger. Part dragon, angel, or sorcerer, they must fight their own kind, demons, and the lure of their darkest nature) and the Offspring series (X-Files meets LOST-ish). More at jaimerush.com

As Tina Wainscott, I've written many romantic suspenses, some with a touch of the paranormal. My newest project is a straight out romantic suspense series about five Navy SEALs who take the fall for a covert mission gone wrong and join The Justiss Alliance, a private agency that exacts justice outside the law. tinawainscott.com

I'm excited to be working on a brand new romantic suspense series!

When five Navy SEALs take the fall for a covert mission gone wrong, the brotherhood of bad-asses join The Justiss Alliance, a private agency that exacts justice outside the law.

WILD HEARTS - E-short intro Jan 2014
WILD ON YOU - Feb 2014
WILD WAYS - May 2014
WILD NIGHTS - Nov 2014

My earlier books also twined in a dash of paranormal. Soul-changing second chances play the catalyst for UNTIL I DIE AGAIN, STRANGER IN THE MIRROR, and WOKE UP DEAD. The question of where our souls go when we're in a coma kicks off WHAT SHE DOESN'T KNOW. And psychic connections play into UNFORGIVABLE and TOUCHED BY LIGHTNING. I jumped into the paranormal with both feet in the Offspring series (Avon Books), a kick-ass X-Files meets LOST mix with lots of action and romance, changing my name to Jaime Rush (jaimerush.com] to distinguish them. I'm thrilled to be starting a new series, The Hidden, at Grand Central Publishing, with Dragons, Angels, and magick.

My goal as a writer is to create books that make people feel good. My characters come with baggage, pasts hurts, and vulnerabilities. They go through hell, find love, and at the end, find peace in who they are and everything they've gone through. And isn't that what we all want?

5.0 out of 5 stars dark urban fantasy October 3, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Tattoo artist Zoe Stoker is frightened after receiving an enigmatic cautionary message from a dead person; allegedly CIA. However that seems calm compared to an assassin who tries to kill her. Cheveyo saves her life, but though she does not trust him she goes with him to a recently created support group, the Offspring; as she is one of the children of psychic parents who participated in a government sponsored experiment (see A PERFECT DARKNESS).

Rand Brandenburg also recently joined the Offspring although he preferred not to. His uncanny gambling skill made him known to those who want the Offspring under control or dead like original experimenter Gerard Darkwell. Rand feels for the wary Zoe, but she knows from her past not to allow emotion to control her as her out of control telekinetic skill sends objects flying; however she also finds him to be the first person she cannot keep outside of her heart.

The names alone are great symbols with Cheveyo, Stoker, Brandenburg and Darkwell, etc. providing hints of a dark urban fantasy landscape. This second thriller is fast-paced with the suspense building up from the first Darkness novel; leading to a hooked audience wanting the next entry yesterday. However, in spite of the terrific overarching saga, the keys to OUT OF THE DARKNESS is the lead couple as he embraced his ability for personal gain while she fled her ability out of fear mindful of the X-Men's Rogue. Fans will root for this couple and have dark thoughts about flying bodily objects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of the Darkness review July 11, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Out of the Darkness is the second book in Jaime Rush's phenomenal Offspring series. I love the highly imaginative and unique world that Ms. Rush has created and the characters are very likeable. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes PNR and/or books dealing with psychic abilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read November 21, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I liked this book just as much as the first in the series (A Perfect Darkness). Jaime Rush has a way of spinning it all together that you just can't help but to root for the "Rogues." Not as much romance as I expected. A lot of action, and chases. It was almost dizzying trying to keep up with each character's perspective of what was going on. Yet and still! I'm a big fan of this series. I only wish that the third book, Touching Darkness, would come out sooner than May 2010! If that is the last book in the series I hope that Jaime Rush gives the Rogues some sort of closure. Not necessary a "happily ever after," but a bit of normalcy after all they've been through.

Over all a very interesting story. I liked it ALOT!

3.0 out of 5 stars Second in series February 16, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The 'Offspring' series has its moments of novelty and I did enjoy reading this story. It followed on fairly closely from the previous book, 'A Perfect Darkness', and I wonder if a reader who hadn't encountered the previous book might struggle with what's going on.

Anyway, in this story a few weeks have passed since the events of the first book and the attention shifts from Amy and Lucas, two of the 'Offspring', to a young woman, Zoe Stoker. Zoe is a tattoo artist with her own shop who tries to live a quiet life despite a problem - when she gets emotional or angry, objects fall over or move. She knows she has some kind of telekinetic ability but tries to cover it up.

When Zoe realises she is being watched, thus begins a huge change in her life as it's turned upside down by a group of people known as the Offspring who, like her, have strange abilities. Rand Brandenburg, one of the Offspring, is just passing through, yet Zoe finds herself drawn to him. She knows there's no future with Rand, he doesn't want any entanglements, but as they learn together about the situation of the Offspring, and about the enemy they face, they may find that there are ties binding them that are stronger than they might have expected.

There's quite a lot of action in this book, although there are also parts where the pace flagged a little. The characters from the previous book continue to develop, although I can't work out if Eric Aruda will ever be a 'hero' of a later book. I wasn't always convinced of the likelihood of their continual escapes, plus I got a bit confused about who was related to whom as their parents' stories are discovered, but overall this is a reasonable read. There are clearly other books to come in the series so this story had many unfinished threads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first book January 4, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book more than the first. I did like A Perfect Darkness I just felt that it took a while to get off the ground but part of that was due to all the information that needed to be given to set up the series. In Out of the Darkness the action starts almost right away and is pretty steady throughout the entire book. I also enjoyed the relationship between Zoe and Rand. They both tried their hardest to stay away from each other and keep up there 'I only care about me' attitudes but I knew it wouldn't last and enjoyed watching them lose the battle against each other. You also meet and learn about a couple new Offsprings. Cheveyo is a mysterious character who helps the good guys but from a distance and only gets involved if necessary. Nicholas is a character that was told one thing but is teetering on the line between sides. Jamie Rush's doesn't leave the books wrapped in a perfect bow. I was satisfied with how it ended but there were still big questions that were not answered and it left me still wanting to know and read more. As far as I can tell the next Offspring book comes out in May 2010 and I'll be adding it to my TBR pile.

More About the Author

Things that go bump in the night have always fascinated Jaime Rush. Sometimes those things are human; other times, not so much. Her new Hidden series reveals humans with the essence of gods who walk the knife's edge between Miami and a magical world of passion and danger. Part dragon, angel, or sorcerer, they must fight their own kind, demons, and the lure of their darkest nature.

Jaime is the author of the award-winning Offspring series and writes romantic suspense as Tina Wainscott. Altogether she has published twenty-four novels and five novellas. Contests, sneak peeks and more at www.jaimerush.com.

The Offspring series is about a group of twenty-somethings who live ordinary lives but possess extraordinary psychic abilities. They are the Offspring of parents involved in a mysterious experiment gone awry. Sexy...dangerous...outcasts... They are being hunted by the government and others like them. Together they must find the truth and fight an enemy out to destroy them.

I also have an alter ego. Jaime Rush is a pseudonym for Tina Wainscott, my real name. As Tina, I wrote 18 books for St. Martin's Press and Harlequin, some of which have won Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart award, the Maggie, and RT Book Reviews Reviewer's Choice Awards. I am in the process of bringing out many of these books as e-books under Tina Wainscott!
