Great FARMS Information!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Out of Darkness: Is the Book of Mormon Authentic? (Hardcover)
This book was a great book to read. It was a little slow at the begining but I was really captivated by all the great FARMS info in it. But I don't like it when books end so abruptly as this one did. It has a sequel that is needed to finish out the story line.

I enjoyed this book because even though it is a fictional novel many of the discoveries made in the book have been studied in much depth and many theories have been developed based on som eof the ideas that were put forth in the book. I learned things I porbably wouldn't have had I not read this book and it's companion Into the Light.

Interesting read,
This review is from: Out of Darkness (Paperback)
I enjoyed the technical information that was woven into the story of this book. It was much more fun to read it in the context of a fictional story rather just a study or research article. I was deffiantely left hanging in the end and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The second most poorly written book I have ever read.,

This review is from: Out of Darkness (Paperback)
The information in this book is interesting but scattered throughout the book between poorly written chapters an outlandish plot and horrifically stilted conversations. This book was recommended to me so I have picked it up twice to try to read it. The first time I wasn't able to make it past the first 2 chapters. The second time I tortured myself through more than half of the book. I can't believe that some one would actually publish this author, let alone several books by him. If you want good information relating to the Book of Mormon go to FARMS and Hugh Nibley. If you want good LDS fiction read Orson Scott Card and Gerald Lund. Skip Keith Terry altogether.

Couldn't Put it Down!,

This review is from: Out of Darkness (Paperback)
Fantastic read. Very research based so I loved it. Informative and put together in a way that is much more interesting to read than a research paper for sure! This book shows archeological proof of validity of ancient records found in America. The records talk about their battles, their religion, and their politics. The reading is a little bit complex and should be read carefully but can be very enjoyable.

I have to give the author credit for writing something like this. As much as people of the LDS church like to bear our testimonties, sometimes it's fun to get down to the nitty-gritty details of research--aways combined with faith, of course. So, yes, Terry had good intentions when he wrote this.
The premise is that a weathy man has commissioned a group of scholars to examine the Book of Mormon as to say whether or not it was written by Joseph Smith. So we have the vivid array of varying characters and a big, fancy house. And all these fun characters are going to use their brains to examine a religious text. Of course, only one begins to look at the spiritual nature of the scripture and get his life changed. Pretty predictable. On the other hand, it was fun to see all the scholarly evidence for the Book of Mormon's truthfullness. But to combine it with a weak story? It just didn't amount to much. Terry should have written non-fictional research and left story-telling alone. |
