5.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack and powerful musical performance, November 22, 1999
By
Michael Wood (Cincinnati, Ohio) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Out Of Darkness: The Mine Worker's Story (Audio CD)
Tom Juravich's powerful collection of traditional and newer songs about the life of coal miners is a testament to the human ability to overcome dangerous working conditions, fatigue and low wages by banding together and working for a common goal. In "Breaker Boy", Juravich addresses the problems of child labor in the mines. "The Coal Tattoo" speaks to the danger and allure of mining life. This is a soundtrack to the award-winning film, "Out of Darkness, the Mine Worker's Story". Tom Juravich, who also works as a university professor when he is not recording or giving performances, has captured the traditions and aspirations of the American worker in this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and educational, July 5, 2000
This review is from: Out Of Darkness: The Mine Worker's Story (Audio CD)
Tom Juravich is a capable singer and musically, the songs on this CD are adequate (it's got a certain mid-80s top 40 feel to it). Nevertheless, this album is so much more than the sum of it parts. Particular standouts are Breaker Boy, a song about children working in the mines; Ludlow Massacre (words by Woody Guthrie), which has lyrics so powerful they literally made me cry the first time I heard them, and an adaptation of Florence Reece's immortal Which Side Are You On? This CD has been in heavy rotation for the past two weeks and doesn't look like it will be dropping out of the CD changer anytime soon.
