Sophomore effort shows growth,

First and foremost, since the acquisition of Polygram by Universal, several Reba albums have been defaced. I am what you would call a "purist" when it comes to CD reissues. The version of this album I own (re-issued by Mercury under the guidance of Kira Florita) contains the original artwork and not some cheesy cover designed for more commercial appeal. Cover asside, this is a good album. Reba gives us her first song-writing effort with "Daddy" an ode to her father written and sung with the amount of pride only a doting daughter can deliver. Granted, it's not Grammy material, but the amount of love and respect shown is this song is nothing less than admirable. The album also contains a duet with Jacky Ward, "That Makes Two of Us." The highlights on this album are "Now and Then," "I'm a Woman," and my personal favorite "Rain Fallin." Granted this album is short on hits, but still respectable.

WHY DIDN'T MERCURY SEE WHAT THEY HAD??,

If this Mercury CD flopped as did McEntire's first Mercury album, this most certainly wasn't the result of poor quality. They just didn't market Reba properly. The result here is a great album with an endearing Reba singing in a simple, yet beautiful style without any pretention. I love it. I love the song "Runaway Heart". But there are also many, many other great tunes here. This CD is worth a listen.

Reba was a young filly here. But the music still holds up better than most of the stuff she's recorded since! A++++ all the way!

Let's get acquainted with Reba kind of CD. She wasn't famous yet when she recorded this but it surpasses most of the things she recorded after she became a superstar.

UNCOMPLICATED AND FREE AND EASY!!,

This is late seventies countrypolitan stuff but Reba makes it work for her, mostly because of the intelligent production given the proceedings by Jerry Kennedy and the life that Reba's voice gives to pretty melodies of songs (some that are good, some o.k. and one loser W-O-M-A-N). But because its early Reba and it sounds great, I'll still give it five stars. Worth getting your hands on!

NOT QUITE THERE YET BUT STILL OUTSTANDING!!,

Reba hadn't yet come into her own quite yet here but that doesn't stop me from giving this CD 5 stars because the material and the way she engages it is so far superior to the awful stuff she puts out now (a few songs notwithstanding). This collection was produced by Jerry Kennedy who knew exactly what kind of sound to get from her and even though some of the songs aren't quite up to par yet, they are far and above fantastic compared to the crossover stuff queen she has become. I love "Last Night Every Night", "Make Me Feel Like a Woman", "That Make's Two Of Us", "Rain Fallin", and "Runaway Heart". I could have done away without her cover of "Sweet Dreams" which ONLY Patsy Cline can get away with doing. But its o.k. Its still listenable.

THIS IS AN UNDERRATED JEWEL!,

Listening to this CD takes me back to the days when Reba was down-hom charm personified. She deserved the success she's gained because she's worked hard enough for it. The thing that saddens me though is that listening to this, and then listening to what she's put out since then, makes me wonder if it was all worth it?? Anyhow, this CD is an underrated jewel that features Reba McEntire outstandingly!! My favorite song on here is "Rain Fallin" and "I Still Long to Hold You Now and Then".

That's five greats for a five star rating on an underrated CD! Reba's later material can't hold a candle to the kind of stuff she does here. Its not showy stuff, just down-to-earth, pleasant listening..just like Reba was herself....once....long, long, long, long, ago.
