Satisfied but disappointed,
By A Customer
This review is from: Out in the Fields - Very Best of (Audio CD)
Still Got the Blues contains one of the best guitar solo's of all time and what did they do on this CD? They CUT IT OFF! How could a record company, and more importantly, how could Gary Moore allow this to happen! A major disappointment on an otherwise fine CD.

One of Gary's Best CD's,
By Mike S (Front Royal,Virginia United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out in the Fields - Very Best of (Audio CD)
This CD thoroughly covers Gary Moore's best songs. This is a must own for hard rock fans and guitar fanatics. Gary's guitar playing is filled with passion and feeling; and it's been captured on this album. The Loner, Military Man, Parisiene Walkways, Still Got The Blues, and Still In Love With You are the best songs on this album. There isn't a bad song on this CD. Gary Moore is one of the top guitarists ever; and never gets the proper credit he deserves. If the media would push Gary in America the way the push Bruce Springsteen; Gary would be called the boss. This CD proves Moore is a man amongst boys in the world of rock.

Good - Blues & Ballads may be a better,
By
This review is from: Out in the Fields - Very Best of (Audio CD)
Many great tracks: Empty Rooms, Cold Day in Hell (tons of energy), Free's Wishing Well (great to hear after all these years), Still Got the Blues. I prefer the Thin Lizzy (Brian Robertson/Scott Gorham) version of Still in Love with You -- it is hard to beat perfection, but it is good to hear that song again (soulful slow blues). Parisienne Walkways show-cases Gary's remarkable near infinite sustain (Les Paul and lots of gain through a Marshall amp), and this live version seems to sustain forever -- a Gary Moore classic! Great to hear the late, great Phil Lynott's voice too. However, the collection doesn't seem to hang together as well as I had hoped. I think Blues and Ballads might be a more coherent compilation of similar material.

Excellent compilation of Moore's solo work...,

This review is from: Out in the Fields - Very Best of (Audio CD)
This is an excellent overview of Gary Moore's solo work. No, it isn't complete-that would take 3 discs minimum. This album has more of Moore's hard rock material rather than his great blues playing. Gary Moore has always been one of the most underrated guitarists around. He gets credit for playing the blues, but he has always been a great rock guitarist - some of Thin Lizzy's best stuff is with Moore on guitar.
Every song on this album has strong playing, but some favorites are: Out In The Fields, Over The Hills, Empty Rooms, Still Got The Blues and Parisienne Walkways(this soloing is jaw dropping). If you are a fan of great guitarists - this is a must have, or anything by Mr. Moore, he truly can make the guitar "talk".

One of my favorite albums,

I very rarely buy albums because I usually like only a few of the songs. This CD is an excellent compilation and I love all but one of the songs. This is definitely one of my favorite albums. Moore is both a talented guitarist and songwriter. If you love great rock music, especially from the 70s you will enjoy this album. Its also good the hear the great Phil Lynott on a live version of Parisienne Walkways.

One supercollection of Gary Moore! The first real "Best of",

I must tell the world about this forthcoming release of "Out in the fields - very best of Gary Moore. It has almost everything of Gary Moores finest tracks. You can talk about him for ages - but the best thing you can do is to listen to him citated by mr Phil Lynnot back in 1985. Phil can be heard in the songs "Out in the fields" and "Military man" from the "Run for cover" album. 2 very good songs, it has classy produced supersound! Just go listen to the song"Over the hills and far away" - Mr Gary must be very proud of being Irish! He really knows how to play the guitar! I've just got me a copy of the album, it's come with a bonus cd - in a very limited edition here in Sweden! On that copy you can also hear the b-side of the single of After the war: Emerald!!! One of Thin Lizzys best songs in a very good version! I love that song! I've seen Mr Gar Moore performe live seven times and I must say he is one special live ratist! Back to the cd now! Sit back and enjoy slow tracks like"Still got the blues" ( gold in Sweden back in 1990 ! ), "Empty rooms", and of course Parisienne walkways, Garys old song taken from his soloalbum "Back on the streets". This is a very nice live edition. The bonus cd has also got the supersong "Still in love with you" the back side of the 12" - vinyl from 1985! This is a magic album!END

All the Basics Are Here!,
By Alexander Johansson (Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out In The Fields - The Very Best Of Gary Moore (MP3 Download)
After reading the sceptical reviews of this disc, I wanted to make my voice heard.
In my opinion, these are all excellent tracks. Some of his best songs may not be here ("Oh Pretty Woman", "Moving On", "Walking by Myself", "Victims of the Future", "Don't Take Me for a Loser", "Johnny Boy", and, if you will, the heavy but clichéd riffs of "Hiroshima"), but all the basics are here. This is one of those collections that isn't supposed to be "complete" (what does that mean, anyway?), it's meant to serve as an introduction and does that job perfectly. The remastering is great too, turning the already epic "Over the Hills and Far Away" into a thundering anthem, one of those songs that has to be played on a good sound system to be truly appreciated. Everybody complains about there not being enough blues material on this disc. My answer to you is that only two, I repeat: TWO of all his blues songs were big, international hits ("Still Got the Blues" and "Cold Day in Hell".) His biggest audience is in Europe and Asia, where he was well-known already as a member of the famous but still underrated heavy metal band Thin Lizzy in the 70's. It's only in Northern America he's only famous for his blues stuff. In Europe, we for the most part care equally about the metal and blues material. It's like when the British band Status Quo tours the world. Everywhere they play they receive good reviews for their shows, except in the U.S. And why is that? Because they once had ONE psychedelic hit there ("Pictures of Matchstick Men") and then they changed to boogie rock and got rich and famous. And ever since then, American critics have complained about their live albums/concerts not containing psychedelic material. They haven't played that stuff for 40 years, and Gary Moore didn't play rock after 1990 either (with a few exceptions.) Just blues, blues and more blues. But his biggest hits came in the 80's, in Europe and were often heavy rock. You just didn't pay attention to him then. What I'm trying to say is that this disc is made with European audiences in mind. If that doesn't please you, then buy "The Best of the Blues" instead. And if you want a lot of Gary Moore but don't want to buy his solo albums, try the excellent "Platinum Collection", which has three discs: one with rock, one with blues and one with live material. The only real complaint I have is that there are no liner notes. That's right - zilch, none, nothing. Just all the song lyrics and some cute, but in this case stupid, drawings for every song. "Run for Cover" shows a man running away, "Parisienne Walkways" has the Eiffel Tower and "Wishing Well" has, you guessed it, a wishing well. How original. The back cover looks good, though, and captures the mood of his hard rock recordings. Well done. It would have been better to call this collection "Greatest Hits" instead, since a lot of his "very best" material isn't here, including all the songs I mentioned at the beginning of this review. This is just the surface of his work, and to truly appreciate Mr. Moore you have to dig deeper. But this is a great place to start.

Out in the Fields,
This review is from: Out in the Fields - Very Best of (Audio CD)
`Out in the Fields' is an excellent best of of Gary Moore and serves as a decent introduction to his music for those new to his work as well. This has a great blend of the rock and blues that he is known for and awesome rock tracks like `Military Man' sit happily alongside blues classics like `Parisienne Walkways'. Moore's guitar style always manages to raise goose bumps for me and this album is no exception, he plays with a gritty, heartfelt roar at times and then with the deftest, nuanced lightest touch at others. He really is an overlooked master of his instrument. Granted, his singing is pretty terrible at times, but the song writing and overall feel more than make up for it. If you plan on only buying one album of Moore's then this offers a wide taste of what he is all about, but be warned it may pique your interest enough so you'll want to go out and buy more. No bad thing in my eyes.

Great Anthology Of Gary Moore,
By A Customer
This review is from: Out in the Fields - Very Best of (Audio CD)
OUT IN THE FIELDS is a great anthology of Gary Moore's work of the 80s and 90s. It features material from out-of-print albums such as RUN FOR COVER, THE WILD FRONTIER, and AFTER THE WAR, as well as one track each from each of the first two blues albums. The best track on the collection is "Run For Cover", but there's other great cuts here too, such as "After The War", "Out In The Fields", "Over The Hills And Far Away", "The Wild Frontier", and "Ready For Love." There should have been more songs from CORRIDORS OF POWER and VICTIMS OF THE FUTURE- perhaps a double-disc set set would have sufficed- but this is a good starting place for your Gary Moore library.
