Best of its genre,
By Gromer "Gromer" (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
I'm a journalist reviewing about 5 books of this genre for an article and I do think this is the best one simply because of the strength of the authors' storytelling and the power of the actual facts she sets forth. Lots of personal insights, intimate detail, and remarkable rescues. This isn't a book that someone just wrote overnight and sold with a pretty cover and large font -- this is really a long, well thought-out, dramatically paced and engaging read. I couldn't put it down. If you have pets of your own, you'll find yourself getting all misty eyed when you read of Crisp's determination to run into forest fires just to rescue rabbits or kittens. The history she tells of her emergency rescue crew is also a remarkable one. What an amazing group of people. This book really shows you the best and worst that animals bring out in humans, on both the individual and communal level. Best of all, she doesn't get preachy or political about animal rights; she just wants you to take care of them as well as you can. She even includes a self-help/first aid guide at the back of the book for pet owners in case of a natural disaster.

This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
If you care about companion animals, please please read. The content made me more aware of Animal needs during a disaster, and has inspired me to take a UAN/EARS training course that certifies a volunteer to help in the rescue effort of animals when disaster strikes (tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, etc.). This book reads like fiction and I could not put it down. I am buying several to give as gifts, as this book moved me beyond belief. I hope Ms. Crisp writes more books on Animal Rescue in natural disasters, her personal experiences, and how crucial volunteers are. Ms. Crisp focuses on the positive side of Emergency Animal Rescue for the animals that were left behind to fend for themselves. Great reading and extremely uplifting.

An inspiring book of dedication and courage,
By dogsleder (Sacramento, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
I had the privilege of working as a volunteer with Terri Crisp during flooding in our area in 1997, getting to see first-hand her compassion and ability to inspire others. This book will inspire you, too. She has been instrumental in setting up a nationwide volunteer organization that has branches all over the country, whom she often personally trains through workshops. Whenever a new disaster strikes, be it hurricane, fire, flood or earthquake, I am comforted in knowing that the Emergency Animal Rescue Service is there helping stranded and abandoned animals and reuniting many of them with their owners. You will read some truly amazing accounts in her book and will take away from it the knowledge that there are quiet heroes loving and caring for animals on a daily basis and working constantly to make a safer and better place for animals in the midst of disasters. Each chapter is heart-wrenching, triumphant, filled with miracles. Whenever and wherever Mother Nature strikes, Terri Crisp and her volunteers are there to meet the challenge. Read about them and think about what you, too, can do.

I bought this book because I love animals with a passion and it had a great Amazon rating. By coincidence, the week after I received the book, I saw Terri Crisp on the news helping animals in the Katrina aftermath. I didn't know who she was until then. Each chapter is an absorbing story about animal rescues. We need to have a system to save animals during disasters like Katrina. We are slowly moving in that direction thanks to people like Terri. Thank you Terri, for this book.

A life changing book,
By
This review is from: Out of Harm's Way: The Extraordinary True Story of One Woman's Lifelong Devotion to Animal Rescue (Hardcover)
This book changed my life. Terri's experiences teach us all how dependant our animals are of us. But most importantly, what obligations we as either pet-owners or just animal lovers in general, have towards all other species.
Thanks Terri. Please read this book and finances permitting, join UAN/ EARS w/Terri and I!!!!! Everyone can do their part. ps: take your pets when evacuating in natural disasters!

Unforgettable!,

This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
Terri Crisp will carry one through every emotion imaginable as she tells of her many courageous rescues of animals during both nature and man-made disasters. There are numerous inspiring stories, but the most heartbreaking and disturbing are the ones which tell of owners leaving their pets behind - treating their pets as disposable items. Ms. Crisp explains the tragic consequences of not being prepared for a disaster throughout the entire book. She also includes invaluable pet disaster kits and other information in order to prepare for a disaster. This is one book that I could not put down until the last page was read. It's one that will be read and re-read.

One Person,

'Mom, do you have any good books I can read? Maybe one about animals?' I asked my mom one day when I was bored. When my mom handed me this book, about a year ago, I didn't know what to expect. I read the first chapter and was hooked. The author is so dedicated to animals and has experienced so much, it's hard to put the book down. I think it only took me a few days to read it and I just finished reading it for a second time. This is a book that makes you want to go and make a difference in the world. It makes you realize how much the news doesn't talk about animals in a disaster. When I graduate collage, I want to become an animal disaster volunteer. Right now I'm only 14 so I have a few years but, while I wait it's nice to know there are people like Terri Crisp making a difference in the animal world. Before I read this book I didn't think I could make much of a differance, after reading this book, I've learned how much of a difference one person can make.

A Must Have,
By
This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
I started reading this book while on vacation at my parent's house in Arizona last month. I wasn't able to finish it so as soon as I got home, I found it on Amazon.com and purchased it (paperback). Within a week I received it and started reading where I had ended while in AZ. Absolutely amazing! I want to meet this woman! Being an animal advocate myself, anytime I'm able to read about people who feel as strongly as I do, I'm elated! This book is EXTREMELY well written. As an animal lover you feel her emotions (and catch yourself talking back to the book!). Even if you're not a passionate animal person, this book opens your eyes and heart to the reality of what we need to do to help animals. Animals are like babies, they rely on us for everything. Only when we neglect them do they become feral. Please check out this book then get one for all of your friends! Thank you Terri Crisp!

Terri Crisp does an excellent job of describing her experiences in animal rescues. All-too-often, pet owners leave their animals to fend for themselves in disasters ... a wrong choice that could have deadly consequences. Terri encourages the end of that kind of practice in her excellent, simple and repetitive narrative method. This book is difficult to put down.
