Attn Readers: THIS BOOK CONTAINS EROTIC CONTENT.

Captain James Lancaster, formerly one of London’s most notorious rakes, returns to England a broken man after a brutal tour in the Crimea. He is wounded in body and spirit, his badly injured leg leaving him unable to walk without crutches.

Nurse Katherine Riley has spent her entire life caring for others, but lately she finds herself longing for more. On a whim she indulges in a secret cache of provocative lingerie—just a little something to make her feel beautiful beneath her drab gowns, even if no one else can see it.

When James glimpses the erotic beauty hidden beneath Kate’s prim and proper façade, he introduces her to a sensual array of forbidden delights. Healing takes on an entirely new meaning. As Kate nurses James to a full recovery, their liaison opens her eyes to an enticing new world. How will she ever return to the staid life she once knew?

Q & A with AVA ARCHER PAYNE

Q: What exactly is a 'Hot Historical'?
A: A 'Hot Historical' is a classic historical romance--only shorter and steamier! (50,000+ words) All the best elements remain: a sexy hero, feisty heroine, and of course, a strong physical attraction. Hot Historicals are perfect for fans of traditional romance who occasionally like to spice things up.

Q: What else do you write?
A: I also write traditional (100,000+ words) historical romance novels under the pen name VICTORIA LYNNE. I’ve received two RITA Award nominations, and have consistently earned Romantic Times' coveted "Top Pick" award. What a thrill!

All of my novels are now available on Kindle. I love to hear from readers! Please feel free to message me on Facebook!

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Her League August 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of a promotional tour for the author in exchange for my honest review.

Out of Her League is a delightfully wicked Victorian romance set in London near the end of the Crimean War. With well developed characters, sharp dialogue and plenty of sexual heat, Ms. Payne captured my attention from the first page. While the Victorian era is well known for it's adherence to social and sexual restraint, Ms. Payne captured the periods beginning social revolution towards a more lax attitude between the upper working classes and the nobility. She also captured the era's leanings towards romanticism.

Katherine "Kate" Riley is a young female nurse whose future seems destined to be ruled by duty and sacrifice. What began as willing labor after her mother's death has now become a chore; her brother's take her housekeeping duties and income from her employment for granted. Determined to have a little bit of fun Kate has arranged a holiday, which will cost almost nothing.

Unfortunately her brother's gambling once again forces Kate to surrender her plans and force her to agree to assist the doctor assigned to help cure Captain James Lancaster's injuries. Ms. Payne did a wonderful job with Kate's character; at the start of this story she is like a cygnet, a baby swan who hasn't developed it's wings and beauty, but by the end of the story she is a fully developed swan ready for flight. Her sexual awakening is quite magnificent.

Captain James Lancaster is also the perfect hero for Kate's heroine. A hero home from the Crimean War, he's bitter and somewhat angry about the direction his life has taken at the beginning of this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read. July 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was just right for a lazy afternoon read. The story was not too intense, no annoying dramatic catastrophes, common in other historical romances. Just two people working through life's regular amount of difficulties.
The story flowed well and the erotic scenes were erotic! There were only a few typographical errors where I had to re-read the sentence to grasp the correct meaning but not enough of them to mar the reading experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! August 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A lot of times when you read Historical erotica, it's all about the sex. There may be a few mentions of corsets and cravats thrown in, but the real history just isn't always there. What I loved about this book is that you get that hot erotic story, but with a rich Historical setting. As a former nursing student, I especially appreciated the history of nursing thrown in as well as mentions of Florence Nightingale.

As a heroine, I really sympathized with poor Kate. It is a story we've all read about in Historicals, the pragmatic younger sister who has to sacrifice her happiness because of her drunken, gambling, bumbling idiot brothers. After her physician father's death, Kate's brothers gamble and drink away their inheritance, leaving Kate to have to scratch, scrimp, and work like a dog to support them all. She's got dreams though...getting to Paris and exploring the Lourve and the cafes and shops, freely and without demand from her brothers, while wearing her scandalous collection of lacy and silky unmentionable beneath her gowns. Kate doesn't buy the lingerie with seduction on the mind, she buys the decadent confections because she wants to feel beautiful, womanly. When her dreams of a Paris trip are crushed, Kate finds herself working with a doctor to do physical rehab on an injured war veteran.

Enter James Lancaster, the perfectly charming hero. He was definitely my favorite character of the two. Suave, charming, sexy and best of all, owning a sense of humor that had me giggling on several pages. When he catches a glimpse of Nurse Kate's silky unmentionables beneath her drab work clothes, he is intrigued with her. Throughout the book, though, I was intrigued with him. He was just that loveable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot, Hot Read June 8, 2014

I enjoyed this story and the characters. Kate seemed to be a dowdy nurse who underneath was a sensual woman. She caught the eye of James, a wounded soldier. The love scenes were hot and sensual. I can't wait to read the other books by Ava Archer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Read! March 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Kathrine Riley & James Lancaster who met after the captain came back from the war with an injury that was not healing properly. It seems the captain was shot in the left shoulder and also had broken his ankle and was unable to continue to carry out his duties during a battle. So he was sent home, his mother sought the help of Dr. Michelson and he needed a nurse which is Kathrine or Katie. Upon examination it was determined the doctor could help the captain. Read this book it will make you laugh, cry and cum a great deal. The author wrote about a very real experience and the characters were able to successfully bring the story to life. Prepare to laugh and get wet. Enjoy reading it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, quick & hot read February 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good, quick & hot read. For me as a modern-day woman, I can't imagine being tied to family members who would expect me to take care of them to the point of repressing my own wants...so I was rooting for Kate to break away to find her own happiness.

The characters were pretty well developed for such a short read. The thing that took a star away for me was the missing words or incorrect words scattered throughout the book. While I can fill in the blanks, simple editing errors like this will always cause me to take away a star.
