Wow! Patty Jansen serves up several excellent stories of varying length. The stories read like they were written by different authors. A nice touch after each story is a note about how she got the idea or what inspired her to write it.

This ebook is 3866 Kindle locations in length, and has a table of contents with a link to each story. I noticed about 10 typos or scanning errors.

A collection of spec-fic short stories by a fellow Australian author. Should really be four and a half stars, but not quite five in my personal rating system, which requires an 'Oh wow!' moment to occur while reading a book.

I have read a number of this author's longer works and when I caught up with her at the Australian National Speculative Fiction convention earlier in the year (Conflux 9 in May 2013), I took the opportunity to pick up this collection of her shorter works to see how she went in this form.

To my mind, the collection is a credit to the author and definitely shows her depth as a story writer, as it runs the full range from the metaphorically magical (i.e. 'Taking Back the Words') through to serious science fiction (i.e. 'The Weed Eaters') informed by the author's own scientific career. I especially appreciated the opening story 'Highway' which captures the 'feel' of a particular deserted stretch of road in Queensland, Australia, which I have travelled myself a number of times. Though the story is, of course, speculative fiction, the road and the feeling one gets when driving along it is real in my experience and the author has translated that feeling into fiction very well.

Definitely worth a read.

The stories revolve around a family's adventures with the outside universe invading their space. Their "space" is a highly unusual asteroid and some of the descriptions and technological loopholes are rather interesting. Overall it was an amusing story with some interesting twists.

Austraila is a new treasure-trove of Sicience Fiction writers for me. These stories have an interesting point-of-view. They all view the future from Down Under.
