Sandy Brechin: scottish celtic rock accordion,
This review is from: Out of His Tree (Audio CD)

I never thought of myself as being a huge fan of accordion music, but this stuff is amazing! It's a mixture of Celtic traditional, jazz, cajun and sheer magic. They way this man's fingers fly boggles the mind, and I can guarantee that the sounds he coaxes out of that humble squeezebox are like nothing you've ever heard before. Sandy has to love what he does, and it translates into the music. On my worst days, I can listen to these tunes and they force me into smiling, even against my will! The tape lives in my car's cassette player, I never tire of hearing it.
My favorites tend to be Sandy Brechin's own compositions- especially "Turtles, Dogs and Fine Highland Cheeses", the "Out of His Tree" set, "Millenium" and "Aberdour", but it's all good stuff. There is a very beautiful rendition of "Eastwinds", a piece by the English concertina player Alistair Anderson, and some tunes by Colin Macfarlane, who plays guitar for the band. Aaron Jones on bass and Jim Walker on drums are really superb, these guys play well together and sound like they had fun doing it!(Heck, even the liner notes are a great read!) I highly recommend trying to find Sandy's first solo album, "Out of His Box", which is equally wonderful. Also, the two albums he did with Seelyhoo, "The First Caul" and "Leetera", and anything by Burach, yet another of his bands, which can be found on the Amazon site. I have ordered several copies of this album for Christmas presents, both for those I know who already like accordion music, and for those who have yet to discover it's delights! This music will definitely get you thinking in a new way about the instrument, and whet your appetite for more.

Wow! I love this CD. Sandy is a very gifted player. This CD will have you looking at accordian playing in a whole new way. Forget the old guy playing in a polka band, this stuff is HOT!
