Book Description

More of the West December 31, 2002
Out From Las Vegas: Adventures A Day Awayis America's favorite guide to the great getaways and scenic trips just a day or less away from downtown Las Vegas. Author Florine Lawlor, a third-generation Nevadan, was born to write about the Silver State. Daughter of a gold miner who once worked at the now abandoned ghost town of Delamar, FlorineÕs grandfather, a pioneer Nevada railroad man, worked for Union Pacific.

Geologist Andy Zdon, (Desert Summits A Climbing & Hiking Guide to California and Southern Nevada, Geology of the Las Vegas Region) joined Florine on the update of this new edition.

Listen to the wind in the spires of Cathedral Gorge or is that the voice of Mrs. GodbeÕs ghost riding over the hill from Bullionville? Look for lost diamonds in the McCulloughs or follow the old road to Alamo. Are there really unidentified flying objects in the evening skies above the remote Extra Terrestrial Highway or are those just members of the mysterious Groom Lake Flying Club? Pack the car, a cooler, and a copy of Out From Las Vegas and be prepared for an adventure for the entire family.

ÒItÕs hot! Take a look a this gem of a book and begin planning at least a yearÕs worth of day or weekend trips in and around Nevada. I can guarantee youÕll be pleasantly surprised.Ó
Nancy Gott, freelance writer/adjunct professor, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Ò. . . Lawlor put her lifelong love of the desert to work. . . to give Nevadans a greater appreciation of the beauty and history that exists here.Ó

From the Publisher

Nevada is the last great desert frontier in the contiguous United States. North of Las Vegas, where the skies are blue and clear above the sage-covered desert, the Great BasinÕs range country is defined by alpine environments where aspens and pines shade the traces of last winterÕs snow on their northern slopes. In contrast, NevadaÕs basins are decorated by colorful mesas, the autumn leaves of cottonwoods, and herds of wild horses that inspired great artists like Maynard Dixon, who traveled from San Francisco across California to Nevada in the 1920s to paint them. Anyone who views Nevada as a vast desolate wasteland is very wrongÑit is simply an incredibly beautiful place.

We thank our readers who sent us their field notes regarding inaccessibility to areas due to new construction and private property closures, damage to areas from vandalism, littering, and "rogue" off-road vehicle use. Several trips in the first edition have been removed because they no longer exist, replaced by new streets and neighborhoods. Routes like Brownstone Canyon have been closed due to the access issues of private property. Located in what was once NevadaÕs largest Anasazi settlement, the thousand year-old Mesa House, in the first edition, was turned to dust by ATVs. Readers of this edition are directed to a reconstruction of Mesa House at the Lost City Museum in Overton.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the glitter..., December 14, 1999
By
Kirk Voelcker (Las Vegas, Nevada) - See all my reviews
This book describes favorite off-road trips to the rugged natural beauty of the Las Vegas desert, including the Red Rock Canyon, an idyllic contrast of deep sandstone canyon forests and desert hills in spring bloom. Alas, though much of what is described still exists, the book is nearly thirty years out of date and requires revision. Hey, I can do that! Why? I've lived in the Radiant City for thirty-five of my forty-one years.

I am heartened that this book in the most popular purchase of the Las Vegas purchase circle. It means that those who have moved here truly wish to make Las Vegas home rather than the place they cashed in their Southern Californian real estate chips.
