This review is from: Out of Many One Family: How Two Adults Claimed Twelve Children Through Adoption (Paperback)
This book is not at all what I was expecting. I felt it read more like an instructional manual then a book, and there was little depth to each chapter. I was expecting a bit more about their interactions as a family and how the children did once arriving home, etc. It really didn't go much beyond the matching and adoption process, and this repeated many times over. If you have never adopted before and are interested in the process this might be a good book for you. If you have already been through the process you may find it quite repetitive, as I did. I would be more interested to learn more about how this family functions in their day to day life being a family with 12 adopted children.

I have followed Claudia's blog for a few years, and loved getting to see further into how her family was formed. This is a wonderful tale of adopting from foster care, both younger and older children. I wish there had been room for a lot more stories!

Intimate Look Inside a Foster Family,
This review is from: Out of Many One Family: How Two Adults Claimed Twelve Children Through Adoption (Paperback)
I just finished reading my copy of Out of One Family, Many. I received it in the mail when I got home from work, and found myself staying up until 4 in the morning to finish reading it. I was surprised at what a "page turner" it was!
I had expected a somewhat academic or didactic story about foster-adoption, but instead the story of how two unique individuals came together in marriage, and then how they built a family with children adopted from foster care, jumped out of the pages of this book. If you're considering fostering children, or providing a permanent family for children in foster care, this is a must-read. It's the book I've been looking for. This story is real and honest, detailing disappointments and challenges this family faced as they claimed first one child, and then more and more children as a part of their family. Through some remarkable adventures, and past some daunting hurdles, the indomitable spirit of the parents shines through.

This book is a phenomenal account of the truth in adopting children from foster care. It is a very easy read (I read it the afternoon it arrived in my mailbox.) Bart & Claudia's dedication and commitment shine through.

I found "Out of Many, One Family" to be informative and fun. There aren't many books out there about adoption that come from the parents point of view and this story was excellent. It motivated me to increase our family of 5 to a family of 7.

Encouraging and Thoughtful,
This review is from: Out of Many One Family: How Two Adults Claimed Twelve Children Through Adoption (Paperback)
I found this book to be encouraging, and thoughtfully written. Claudia and Bart are very respectful and careful in how they write about their children. It is good to read this in conjunction with reading Claudia's blog. Offers insight into the adoption realm, and realistic about the challenges in older child adoption. She writes with hope and optimism, and the reader is encouraged by the humor and joy amidst the difficulties.

A Wonderful Read,
This review is from: Out of Many One Family: How Two Adults Claimed Twelve Children Through Adoption (Paperback)
The Fletchers share their amazing adoption journey with honesty and humor. Writen as part autobiography and part how-to manual, the chapters flow. I love the bulleted reflections and summaries at the end of each chapter. I wish this book was available before we began our own adoption journey. It would have made the process less mysterious and far less stressful. I liked this book so much I donated a copy to our local library!

A family built and lessons learned,

I've read large chunks of both Claudia and Bart's blogs and actually found the blogs to have the depth and breadth that I've been looking for in adoption tales. However, for someone considering adopting older children, this would be an excellent "first" book as it raises all sorts of scenarios based on their experiences. Claudia (and it really does feel like Claudia did the bulk of the writing) uses their story to point all sorts of little lessons that can be learned about foster/adopted children, birth parents, "the system", social workers, and the foster/adoptive parents themselves.
