4.0 out of 5 stars True Scots, April 20, 2005

This review is from: Out for the Night (Audio CD)
This album sees the band at the top of their form with Mike Katz on pipes, Pat Kilbride on guitar and vocals, Alan Reid on keyboards and Alasdair White on fiddle and mandolin. Spirited playing and singing with a variety of songs and tunes new and old from slow airs to high energy medleys, characterise this fine album. There's also three live tracks from their UK 2002 tour.

Plenty of great tunes to rave about: Seudan A'Chuain by Allan MacDonald, The Road to Benderloch by Angus McColl, John Sheahan's lovely slow air Christ Church, named for Dublin's protestant cathedral and traditional favourites like An Cota Ruadh, McKenna's Jig and Lord Randall. Mike Katz's own tunes are excellent too: Barbhas agus Butthead, Trouble at Baghdad Roundabout, Clan Coco and Fifteen Stubbies to Warragul, while Alan Reid's slow air Rest and Be Thankful is just divine.

A fine feast of Scottish music that comes highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, June 30, 2005

This review is from: Out for the Night (Audio CD)
This CD has it's ups and downs as most CDs do. The ups are, as usual for the BB, very good instrumentals and arousing vocals (they bring out the Gael in you). "The Earl of Errol" is very Celtic and very well done; I can listen to it over and over again (though the subject matter is not altogether preferable). However, this CD would have been an easy five-star if they had left out "Belfast to Boston," which was yet another attempt at quaint modernity (it simply doesn't work guys) by yet another supposedly Celtic band (when I want Celtic music, I want Celtic music, not ANYTHING to do with Boston, NY, etc.), as well as "Lord Randall," which is very tiresome and repetitive, and "King's Schilling" which is a stereotypically PC song (why do they call themselves the Batlefield Band?). Although my review may seem harsh, this CD is worth buying, "Carron Water" is excellent, "The Earl of Errol" is thrilling, and most all of the numerous instrumentals are very fine, and counteract the PC and stinker songs without too much trouble.
