*Out of Nowhere* is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I just re-read it a few days ago and it still kept me awake, wanting to finish just one more page. 3.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it.
After reading reviews of this book, I began reading with much anticipation. At first, I was not disappointed. This book had an excellent premise, and a very engrossing beginning. But approximately 100 pages into it, and it completely stalled and moved forward at a snail's pace. Essentially, nothing much happened during the next 100 pages. This author is far too...

*Out of Nowhere* is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I just re-read it a few days ago and it still kept me awake, wanting to finish just one more page. Amanda Maxwell/Erica Baird is the ultimate heroine, and Jake Fowler the perfect match for her. Doris Mortman obviously did her research before attempting to create this story what with the details of the witness protection program, money laundering, mobster, etc. She weaves an intricate tale that pulls you in, and has you on the edge of your seat while Max fights to get her life back. It has the perfect combination of suspense, romance and intrigue that keeps you reading til the last page when the villain is finally revealed as someone you least suspect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, November 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Mass Market Paperback)
I read a lot of books, probably at least five a week. And I don't remember the last time I could not put a book down. I got up early this morning before work to finish it! Very well written, excellent character development, suspenseful. This is my first Mortman book and I look forward to reading others. It's so nice to see a female character who uses her wits and character to forge her own way. Never did I feel she was a victim. She never allowed herself to be. I really liked that. I recommend this highly.

This author is far too wordy. She says in 5 pages what could be said in one. At first I appreciated the amount of detail, especially when describing the WITSEC program that Ricki went through. But after a while, I realized the author simply likes to go on and on about a subject, even when it's wiser to stop. I also found her writing pretty flat. I think it's very telling that the love scenes sparked not the slightest emotion in me. They were completely mechanical, which I think is this author's writing style. Instead of showing me how Max felt, the author told me. That just doesn't work with love scenes. Again, she provided detail where she should have provided evoked passion. I put this book down (and picked it back up again) at least 10 times in two days. I tried so hard to keep reading it, because I did want to know how the book ended, but it just couldn't keep my interest. Not sure if I'll bother with any other of this author's books. Perhaps there's not enough "wow" in her books for me.

This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first time reading Doris Mortman's book and I must say it was great from page 1! I never guessed the ending, wich is unusual for me. I am now looking for her other books! A very believable story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare pleasure, October 8, 2002
This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Mass Market Paperback)
It is unfortunately an uncommon experience to find a compelling and utterly suspensful thriller with a well defined and believable heroine. "Out of Nowhere" is just such a thriller. It has a fascinating heroine and a real sense of danger to her. Her circumstances seem highly believable and, in this age of paranoia and terrorism, her inability to trust actually seems relatable. I don't want to rehash the plot in this review, but I do very much recommend this novel. It's engrossing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner by Mortman!, August 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Hardcover)
Dorris Mortman has again woven a tangled web of characters that drive the reader onward! Her newest heroine is Amanda Maxwell is a young woman who has left the Witness protection program to find a life for herself. In reading 'Out of Nowhere' we are consumed with a desire to see Amanda find that life of freedom she seeks, while trying to second guess the motive of every character she encounters. The book set mainly in New York offers the reader glimses of the police force, wallstreet, the mafia and how they are all entwined! You'll find it hard a hard book to put down! Linda Rocco

5.0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS, August 14, 2008
This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Mass Market Paperback)
Great book. I didn't find it wordy at all and I usually skip many pages of books because of this. This book didn't bore me at all and I read every page, unusual for me. Good suspense all the way through the book. Great ending, I never would have guessed.

2.0 out of 5 stars WORDY, March 3, 2008
This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Mass Market Paperback)
The book/story started off well, with interesting characters and plot. The two problems I see are this: 1) the author is VERY wordy and this story needed to be edited down by about 1/3. It is 540 pages where 230 would have made a much better read. 2) If you were a leading lawyer in a powerful law firm and it was found that the firm was laudering drug money, which lead to the death of your ex-wife and daughter, would you stay at that firm?? It doesn't seem plausible to me that a powerful man who (in the story) sees his daughter as the most important thing in his life wouldn't have left that firm for another?? It's important because the daughter in witness protection renters his life which leads to obvious problems and such.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twists and turns, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Out Of Nowhere (Mass Market Paperback)
Not once was I completely sure "who done it". I love that in a book. If it wasn't for the physical need for sleep, I would have read the book in one sitting, though I did find myself reading slower and slower as I got to the end because I didn't want to stop reading!

Highly recommended.
