Never having read a book by Mr. Shelby (until now), I was unfamiliar with his characters, however, that didn't keep me from enjoying these wonderful shorts.
Out of time is a series of five short stories, each with a twist. Mr. Shelby does a great job of hooking the reader into the story, only to turn it on its ear. In each story, the reader is taken on a ride. The destination seems to be in sight when he whips the wheel around, making a sharp u turn on the reader. Guessing the ending felt like a major accomplishment, as surprise endings become the norm. Working within the short story format, he gives the reader just enough details to get us hooked before turning the world upside down. `Twisted Sister' was my favorite, and shocked me at the end. While `Sparring partner` gives a wonderful example of poetic justice. `The beginning of the end' was very well done, but apparently part of a much larger story.

Overall, I enjoyed each story for its own merits. My only confusion came from reading the ones that were part of an existing storyline. Knowing that now, I will be reading more of Mr. Shelby's work as soon as I can.

These 5 short stories by Jeff Shelby all share one thing, someone is out of time.

Sparring Partner: When Lucy Montoya first saw the cabin in Mistwillow her boyfriend Scott had talked her into renting, she thought it would make them both happy. But instead Lucy has another nose bleed and Scott he seems to be half out of his head with worry.

Frozen in Time: Elizabeth, Joe and Lauren are going to have a great Christmas as long as a dream is only a dream and not the start of a nightmare.

Jacked Up: Thirty years as a homicide detective has taken its toll. Jack Foye needs 4 more days until he's done, until he retires, until he can finally relax. Why then is he running, gasping for breath, sweating profusely? He just needs more time!

Twisted Sister: Brittany and Anastasia rob the check cashing store so they can move to LA. But only one of the sisters need acting classes. Will the real twisted sister please stand up and take a bow?

The Beginning of the End: Liz's brother is out of time and the only one who can help him is Noah, Liz's boyfriend. How do you help someone who has used up all their chances?

I enjoyed this collection of short stories. Each story had a twist or two and each was clearly written. I also liked that each of the stories had an 'out of time' theme, but that each story was completely different from the others.

Another fine example of Jeff Shelby's writing. This collection of 5 short stories, some feature Shelby's main charactors and others introduce some new ones, will keep the reader turning pages, even if they are electronic ones! Great reading, Jeff!
