First, if you are not familiar with the game, it is text based, so it won't have all the fancy graphics you get from the console games. But if your concern is accuracy and realism, then this is the game to get.

Gameplay

There are numerous ways to play OOTP. You can choose to control everything, from trading, signing free agents, drafting rookies, etc.. You can sim though your games for instant gratification, seeing how your moves play out. Or you can play out every game, making all the in-game decisions. Like who to pinch hit or and when to pull your starter and bring in a reliever.

The game includes many variations of real MLB rules. Like the rule 5 rule with a rule 5 draft, minor league options, league expansion, and a new feature, the ability to negotiate with rookie draft picks. Do you have a drafted rookie who wants too much $$$ up front? Then pass on signing him and receive a compensation pick in the next draft.

Of coarse, most of these features are optional. If you simply want to sim through seasons without all these advanced options, you can disable them.

Another big feature is the included MLB database. Which allows you to import any season of baseball history, going all the way back to 1871. And if you choose, the game will even expand and realign the league as needed, mirroring the actual history of Major League Baseball. Or create your own baseball world with completely fictional players.

Out of the park is a baseball management/sim game. You just make the teams, you dont actually swing the bat or pitch. You can either sim through the seasons games, making roster moves. Or you can play each game by managing who is the the lineup, pinch hits, etc... through a text based system. If you have never played a game of this sort, you should first download and try a trial of this game.
To be able to enjoy this game you must
(1) Love,Love,Love baseball .
(2) Love managing and making your own team
(3) have patience to learn most of the rules faced by a real gm (rule 5 drafts, dfa's, waivers,finances and many more)

Those are, in my opinion, the general outlines to know if you can enjoy it. Yes it is hard to start a game at first as it is a little complicated. This is because you can choose from a plethora of options to set up a league(fantasy draft, setting up divisions, team names, adding different leagues like japanese league, choosing year, choosing player database, etc...) This is for the advanced players. There is also an option in the menu to create a new league automatically based on regular MLB guidelines. This lets you get into the game right away after you make the your manager and select a team in the same menu.
But i also think this years version interface is alot cleaner,neater, and faster. Still, it takes a while to get used if you have never played OOTP's baseball sim . Of course its hard to make it look simple as Baseball Mogul ,as that doesnt have anywhere near the number of options and depth of OOTP.
Basically just download the demo from the ootp site and give it a try. First see whether you like textbased baseball. If you do , then ask yourself if you think you have the patience to learn the rules faced by real GM's .Sure it takes awhile but once you get used to most of them, this game is easily the best and most satisfying text based baseball sim.

This game is light years ahead of games such as mogul and diamond mind. Every single rule in MLB is in this game, Rule 5 drafts, amateur drafts, options, waivers, contract negotiations, budgets, signing bonuses, etc, etc, etc. To a first time player, the game will surely seem daunting, but after a few hours you will love everything about it. Players develop realistically over time, you will be forced to make tough decisions based on age/talent and contract demands. Free agency is done very well and certain players will inflate their value and others will simply not sign with your team for personal reasons. Unlike mogul, it is difficult to win with a small market team and you are forced to deal with the owner's budget. It's difficult to sum this game up in a review, but at least try the free demo out (google search OOTP). Incredible baseball game!
