3.0 out of 5 stars The Tiny "book".
I was surprised by how small the book is and how little detail is in written form. Much is left up to the individual to look at the pictures and figure things out.

This review is from: Out Of Print - Foam Roller Techniques for Massage, Stretches and Improved Flexibility (Spiral-bound)
This book is exactly what I was looking for. It's a quick, practical reference of different ways to use a foam roller. It begins with the upper neck and moves through all the major muscles groups down to the feet. There are two pages devoted to each muscle group. The first shows you a basic exercise. The second shows you a stretch for that same muscle group. The exercise pages also includes a variation of that exercise at the bottom of the page.

Some of the techniques also require a strap (for stretches) and/or a yoga mat, but if you have a foam roller, you'll be able to use most of this book immediately. The spiral binding is also good for keeping the book open to a page while doing the exercises and stretches.

I decided on this book because the authors seemed highly qualified (an MD, a PHD, etc) but the book doesn't overload you with too much text. The pictures are black and white, but they are clear and easy to follow.

One thing that this book didn't have which I found helpful in another book is a brief description of how to care for your foam roller. But all you need to know about that is that you should wash it occasionally with mild soap and water (or rubbing alcohol), avoiding solvents that may damage the foam (like bleach or oils). And try to store it lying flat; avoid placing anything heavy on top, and avoid leaning it against anything so as to prevent warping.

This book is invaluable for me. Not only is it spiral bound, to hold open where I'm looking at the VERY EASY PHOTOS, and reading the description of what I'm to be doing, it explains how to make it easier to reach some of the positions. I have major chronic nodules from head to toe, and nothing has helped so much as this one book. I'm going to buy another, just to have it in another area of my house. I am very surprised how much I actually use this book, I'm serious! I used the Thera-cane, but since I have so many painful nodules, I can't be trusted with one of those, I bruise the heck out of myself! With this, you just roll into different positions, hold, and move on. No bruising of myself anymore, Yay!!!!! Thanks Doc!

I like the illustrations and the step-by-step instructions, along with what muscles are targeted. Great accompaniment for foam roller users. Spiral bound and the pages can lay flat as you use the book.

I thought this was a book on exercise using a foam roller...and yes, there was some information about using foam rollers but it was more about general exercising. I was disappointed.

To say this book was "so so" is stetching the truth a little. It's not inaccurate, it's just not that usefull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful book for getting ideas, August 22, 2011

I think this is a helpful book for getting ideas about how to use the foam roller. I am a runner and purchased the roller mostly for rolling out painful hamstrings. I think the book has good ideas for that use and other ways to use the roller.

I chose the 24 inch because i thought the 36 that is so popular would be too big and the 18 inch too small. I'm glad i did because this is just right. it fits my mat well so i don't have it rolling away from me and I am able to better control it. it is my first roller and I am glad I didn't wait any longer since it seems to be helping my hip/knee joints after long weekend power walks. would recommend this to others as it is a good size and seems to be doing the job.
