Book Description

From deep within the human body to distant nebulae in outer space, there are worlds all around us that are smaller, faster, and farther than the unaided eye can see. In these thirty-six amazing images, you can see the invisible: from a white blood cell attacking E. coli bacteria, to the delicate splash from a falling drop of water captured by a high-speed strobe. With pictures that astound and fascinating explanations of how each image was captured, award-winning author Seymour Simon takes readers on a fantastic voyage that's truly out of sight.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Photos of objects beyond the detection of the human eyeAeither because they are infinitesimal, too large, too far away or hidden inside the human bodyAare reproduced with remarkable clarity in Simon's (Destination: Jupiter) insightful volume. The author keeps his text to a minimum, explaining succinctly each image featured and the methods and instruments used to capture them, including compound microscopes, fiber optics, CAT scans, MRIs, thermograms and high-speed photography. Only occasionally does the narrative become overly technical for the targeted audience, as in a description of the magnification of subatomic particles in motion. Even the creepy pictures (a head louse magnified 320 times; and plaque and tartar on the surface of a tooth, magnified some 2,700 times) will attract readers. From a three-dimensional picture of a virus, as seen through an electron microscope, to a dramatic photograph of the vast Eagle Nebula, a star-forming region of the Milky Way galaxy, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, these images are awesome in every sense of the word. Ages 5-up. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-Simon has collected an impressive assortment of photographs presenting images that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They include pictures taken through a telescope, through a microscope, magnetic resonance images, CAT scans, scanning electron micrographs (SEMs), time-stopping shots taken with strobes, and aerial and satellite photography. The text serves primarily as extended captions to the photos, providing information on the ways the pictures were taken and a basic explanation of what the images represent. The large, bright illustrations are beautifully reproduced and present some fascinating views of the world. The subjects range from the very small, such as the head of a bedbug, to the very large and far away, as photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope. This book would work well with an adult who wants to share the wonders of science with young children. Older elementary students will be able to read it on their own, although the striking presentation will also appeal to younger browsers.

More About the Author

Seymour Simon, whom the NY Times called "the dean of [children's science] writers," is the author of more than 250 highly acclaimed science books (many of which have been named Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children by the National Science Teachers Association). His free, educational children's app, SCIENCE FUN TO GO, debuted in the Top 10 of all free children's apps in the Amazon App store, and features in app purchase of original Seymour Simon eBooks, as well as a multitude of free content.

Seymour Simon uses his website, SeymourSimon.com, to provide free downloads of a wealth of materials for educators, homeschoolers and parents to use with his books, including 4-page Teacher Guides for all 26 of his Collins/Smithsonian photo essay books. The site provides multiple resources for kids writing book reports or wanting to explore the online Science Dictionary, and also features the Seymour Science blog highlighting current science news. Educators and families are encouraged to sign up to receive the monthly newsletter from SeymourSimon.com to stay abreast of the latest materials that Seymour Simon is introducing to enrich the reading experience.

He taught science and creative writing in elementary and secondary schools and was chair of the science department at a junior high school in the New York City public school system before leaving to become a full-time writer. "I haven't really given up teaching," he says, "and I suppose I never will, not as long as I keep writing and talking to kids around the country and the world."

Seymour Simon is also a creator and the author of a series of 3D books and a series of Glow-in-the-Dark Books for Scholastic Book Clubs, a series of leveled SEEMORE READERS for Chronicle Books, and the EINSTEIN ANDERSON, SCIENCE DETECTIVE series of fiction books. His books encourage children to enjoy the world around them through learning and discovery, and by making science fun. He has introduced tens of millions of children to a staggering array of subjects; one prominent science education specialist described Simon's books as "extraordinary examples of expository prose."

Seymour Simon has been honored with many awards for his work, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Lifetime Achievement Award for his lasting contribution to children's science literature; the New York State Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile Literature; the Hope S. Dean Memorial Award from the Boston Public Library for his contribution to children's science literature; The Washington Post/Children's Book Guild Award for Non-fiction; the Jeremiah Ludington Award for his outstanding contribution to children's nonfiction; the Empire State Award for excellence in literature for young people; and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Forum on Children's Science Books.

In a recent interview Simon was asked if he ever thinks of retiring. "I seem to be working faster and harder than ever. I absolutely don't feel any urge to sit back and look at what I've done. The only things that I'm thinking about are things I'd like to do in the future. I'm planning and doing and continuing to write. It's what I love to do. I remember a story about an anthropologist going to talk to a tribe and he asked them what was their word for "work." Their response was they have no word for work. Everybody does the things that they do in their life. I love that response. I don't differentiate between work and play. Everything I do is something that I enjoy doing - the writing, the research and everything else."

Seymour Simon writes and photographs nature from his hilltop home in Columbia County in upstate New York. You can follow his daily nature walks and see his photographs from the field on Twitter (@seymoursimon) or on his Facebook group page. He also regularly hosts Q&As and sponsors book giveaways on GoodReads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Seymour Simon Hit, January 29, 2010

This review is from: Out of Sight: Pictures of Hidden Worlds (Hardcover)
I'm never disappointed by Seymour Simon books; they feature spectacular photographs and graphics accompanied by fascinating text. His books span the gamut from parts of the body, animals, and natural wonders of our planet. Young readers can count on understandable text, the difficult terms tempered by definition, explanation, and repetition.

Recently I had the good fortune to come across an older work of Mr. Simon's, the prolific author who has written over 200 science books for kids. Out of Sight, a book that explores the unseen domains of our world via modern technology, is just as fresh and vibrant as it was 8 years ago when first published.

Out of Sight is a book of marvelous photographs revealing views impossible to see with the naked eye. Using light microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, thermograms, CAT scans, tomograms, arteriograms, MRIs, the author shares with the wide-eyed reader incredible pictures of unimaginable, hidden words, beyond most of our imaginations.

The massive magnifications are reveal the inner workings of human bodies and the microscopic creatures that dwell in and on us. A bedbug magnified 26X is the stuff of nightmares, and the memory of its gruesome picture is best to forget. With today's technology we can "see" things that even Leeuwenhoek, the inventor of the first simple microscope, couldn't have imagined or anticipated in 1674.

One particularly impressive picture shows a tooth surface magnified 2700x and the gross yuckiness of tartar and plaque in all their disgusting glory. It's enough to motivate any kid to brush his teeth.

In addition to magnifications the book features stop action photos like the one of a bullet in flight severing the Queen of hearts. It's a great shot on several levels. Readers will also enjoy pictures of Earth's geographical features through the eye of a satellite camera and pictures of a distant universe taken with the Hubble telescope.

I work with students of all ages and am able to share books with them and get perspectives of different age and maturity levels. Out of Sight was well received by 8-year-olds ,18-year-olds, and all the ages in between. All were impressed by the graphics while the older readers could appreciate and understand concepts conveyed in the text. Even the most reluctant of readers willingly shared this book with me and discussed the wonders represented in the photographs.

My favorite picture is that of a single red blood cell or corpuscle traveling from artery to capillary. Almost equally magnificent is the depiction of a macrophage attacking an e coli bacterium. These are the kinds of pictures over which one marvels and lingers. The kinds of pictures one eagerly revisits and enjoys.
Out of Sight may have been written for the younger set, but it's a book that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Sight as in Terrific, January 29, 2010
This review is from: Out of Sight (Paperback)
We got this book for our daughter when she was in middle school, and she enjoyed it almost as much as I did. We've never been disappointed by a Seymour Simon book that invariably includes unforgettable graphics and clear text.
The magnificent photos enhance the text and can motivate eager, young readers to seek out more information with further reading.

Readers in grades 4-8 and even adults can readily become enraptured by this fascinating book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Sight!, November 18, 2007
This review is from: Out of Sight: Pictures of Hidden Worlds (Hardcover)
This a fascinating book to use as supplement to science classes. It is about the "inner world", the one we see only in a microscope or instrument that can visualize a world we can't see with our own eyes. Kids will love this book and the photos are the type that will keep some captivated for hours. There is also a section on strobe light photography, used to create stop-motion photography and satellite imaging is used to map the Earth. A fascinating book, I love the text too! Seymour Simon is a good children's writer of science books.
