excellent,
This review is from: Out of the Silence (Audio CD)
This is one of the best album to come out of the 80s.The hauntingly brilliant voice of Darren Wharton.( Thin Lizzy) is chilling to the bone. His tribute to Phil Lynott in The King of Spades is a song that i play over and over again,It is sung with such amazing feeling that it ALWAYS makes me cry. This is a MUST have for ANY metal fan that enjoys good honest fantastic music. Why Darren was ever in the background of Thin Lizzy was a crime. With talent like that he should have been up front. He pens such fantastic lyrics and then sings them so brilliantly he is truly a 5 star guy

The band is Dare, NOT Justine Dare,

For some reason, they decided on this site to call this band "Justine Dare"-nobody knows why. Despite numerous pleas to fix this obvious error, Amazon continues to call this band "Justine Dare". Nobody knows who Justine is, or where she came from.Anyway, a great AOR CD by "Dare" featuring fine vocals by Darren Wharton (NOT Justine). Why this guy wasn't the vocalist for his previous band Thin Lizzy is beyond me. If you like this one, you have to check out "Calm Before the Storm", which is Dare's masterpiece.

This is a breathe of fresh air to all who listen to it.It is Sung with such passion and Darren who has the voice that makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck everytime i hear him.His outstanding tribute to Phyll Lynott with The king of spades is just amazing and they just have to be one of the most under rated bands EVER.They have grown up just like the rest of us with time but still they continue to be a truly gifted and highly talented band,A must for ALL rock fans

well for what its worth here it is. A little too polished maybe but not a bad album. Released in 1988 it sound alittle dated now w/all the keyboards. I originally got into this band from their new cd calm before the storm where in some ways I thought they were heading down a pink floydish path. Out of the Silence in my opinion is not as good as their latest but again i'm listening to it 11 years after the fact. Had i gotten the chance to hear it back then i would have loved it. But I have moved on just as Dare and I feel they are writing much more grown-up material (for lack of better words)today. This cd is a must for Dare fans to see how the band has progressed in their musical journey. Vinny is now no longer w/the band but he continues quite well in a band called Ten which is another one of my favorites and would highly recommend. Keep on the lookout for the new cd (hopefully in 99) called "Belief". As soon as it hits the shelves I hope to have it. Anyone knowing where to find a copy of Dare's Blood from Stone, give a quick email.

AOR Essential - reissued,
By
This review is from: Out of the Silence (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1988, Out of the Silence was the debut album from UK-based melodic rockers Dare. Formed by former Thin Lizzy keyboardist Darren Wharton (who also handles vocals here), Dare also featured future Ten guitarist Vinny Burns. My first exposure to Dare was with their beautiful (but very tranquil) album Belief, so I wasn't sure quite what to expect from their earlier albums. Out of the Silence has a lot of the same beauty and elegance that Belief has, but it's definitely more a product of its time. It's got a more rocking sound (this is Vinny Burns we're talking about after all), and the keyboards are more pronounced. I'd peg it somewhere between Strangeways, Boulevard and Steve Hogarth-era Marillion, which is high praise coming from me. Wharton's expressive vocals are nothing short of gorgeous, and when paired with his emotional lyrics you have an album that goes straight to the heart. Upbeat tracks like "Abandon" and "Into the Fire" are great examples of the classic `80s AOR sound, and the Phil Lynott tribute "King of Spades" is a truly moving ballad. Out of the Silence absolutely qualifies as an unforgettable, classic, essential AOR album. It's melodic rock perfection from start to finish, and belongs in the collection of anyone who's a fan of the `80s AOR/melodic rock sound. Edition Notes: Out of the Silence was reissued in 2008. The new version does not include any bonus material, and there's not much to the liner notes, but it does feature digitally remastered sound, which is reason enough to pick it up, even if you have the older version.

An AOR Masterpiece,
This review is from: Out of the Silence (Audio CD)
Dare is an AOR rock band formed by ex-Thin Lizzy's Keyboard Player Darren Wharton. However, if you are looking for a hard rock record with Thin Lizzy influences, you are better off looking at Blood From Stone, which was Dare's heavier follow up to this album.
This album is a polished soft rock album with lots of upfront keyboards which tend to overpower the guitars. This might come as a shock to those who found Dare through Darren's contribution to Thin Lizzy. That's not a criticism however, as this is some of the best AOR ever recorded by a rock band. Darren Wharton does a great job on lead vocals, which suit the songs perfectly, and there are some fantastic guitar solos, which focus strongly on melody rather than speed which is something many guitarists of the 80's didn't quite get. Things open up with two of the best openers on any album, Abandon and Into The Fire, which are two radio ready AOR Classics. Into The Fire is one of my favorite songs which I still play on a daily basis. Other standouts include the epic and mesmerizing Under The Sun and The Raindance, which has a way of leaving you in a trance after listening. Sometimes I think this album can tend to show its age due to the excessive and dated keyboards, but there is so much to like here that this shouldn't be a problem. To wrap things up, this is a great melodic rock album with some fantastic songs and polished and clean production, most definitely worth your time if you like Journey, Survivor and Giant.

I never heard of the group until I won this CD in a radio station contest. I never knew what I was missing. There isn't a bad song on the CD - they all explode in your face like nothing I have ever heard. This CD is in my list of 5 that I would have to have on a deserted island.

Highly enjoyable power rock,

This review is from: Out of the Silence (Audio CD)
This album, first of Dare's, is an odd combination of metal and power rock with synths, and Dare paid for this by being mostly ignored. I only bought it as a bargain on the strength of the rather stylish cover!
To make matters worse, after this very good first album they tried to make a second "guitar hero" plain rock album (Blood from Stone) and lost all the unique features they offered. By their own admission that was a mistake, and they've since returned somewhat to this style. If you like big choruses, good keyboards in combination with solid guitar, and interesting serious lyrics, give this a try. I love it. Played it over and over, and haven't got sick of it. Standout tracks: Abandon, Into the Fire: two good rock songs with a great full sound Under the Sun: bittersweet with a lot of feeling, starting and ending quietly and sadly. "Nothing lasts forever ... especially the things you always wanted to... Method to their madness, or so they say before they throw away the key..." The Raindance: most synthy song with an almost dancey feel King of Spades: a song with apparently a more personal touch from Darren. All the musicians are what I would call solid: talented, consistent, professional, without being superstars and pushing themselves to the fore. This is a real band rather than a collection of musicians, and not afraid to have a full, rich, layered sound - no basic rhythm guitar+bass+drums here - thank goodness, there are now thousands of such bands, indistinguishable except by marketing.

Innovative musical arrangement, mixture of punk/heavy metal.,

Dare is a group that has been underrated. Their innovative musical style and blending of punk and heavy metal rock is unique. The listener will get a different sound from the usual "Seattle grunge" or Van Halen's heavy metal style.
