Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"If straight women can be pro-lesbian, why can't Camille Paglia? I think what occurred was Camille kept her bra but burned her brain." So says poet Audre Lorde in this amazing and enlightening compendium of quotes on everything to do with gayness: from Natalie Barney's famous remark, "Women's looks were my only books," to columnist Lance Browne on the short-lived marriage of a bisexual movie actor to a bisexual supermodel--"Their careers are real, their marriage isn't. It's matriphony"--to Maria Schneider's story of how she was fired from a Carlo Ponti movie for not concealing her lesbianism. There's also writer Glenway Westcott's report of a conversation with Truman Capote, in which he asked the aging writer if he took any exercise. "Massage," Capote drawled. The ultimate gossip book, rich in once-scandalous news and opinion, In or Out should not only bolster cocktail conversation for the next five years but prove an invaluable resource for writers and activists. --Regina Marler

"I completely enjoyed it, very much so. I don't think you could be human and not be attracted to your same sex."--Elizabeth Shue on her same-sex love scene in Leaving Las Vegas

"Look I'm 40, I'm single, and I work in musical theater--you do the math."--Nathan Lane

"One reason I became an actor was because I heard you could meet queers in the theater."--Sir Ian McKellan

"Perhaps most actors are latent homosexuals and we cover it with drink. I was once a homosexual, but it didn't work."--Richard Burton

3.0 out of 5 stars Another tasty dish of Hollywood on wry!, August 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: In or Out: Gay and Straight Celebrities Talk About Themselves and Each Other (Hardcover)
Journalist/gossipmeister Boze Hadleigh has done it again in "In and Out." I've read, reread, and thoroughly enjoyed his earlier "Hollywood Babble On," "Hollywood and Whine," and "Celebrity Feuds," and while this latest isn't quite on the same level as those others, it doesn't disappoint. Like Hadleigh's earlier books, it's a fascinating read. My only complaint is just this: Much too much of the Ellen DeGereres and Anne Heche thing. I'm reminded of what the former said in an inteview not long ago: "Are you tired of hearing about me? I've got news for you, I'm tired of hearing about me." But that's a minor complaint. Bottom line: Whether you're gay, straight, bi, or just enjoy celebrity gossip at its juiceist and funniest, "In and Out" is Hollywood on wry served to perfection by a master chef.

3.0 out of 5 stars you want gossip?, July 5, 2000
This review is from: In or Out: Gay and Straight Celebrities Talk About Themselves and Each Other (Hardcover)
This book is a great resource for gay/lesbian/bi celebrity gossip. The only thing is that it is repetitive with the same people's quotes, and it doesn't prove most celebrities in or out of the closet. Only the "outed" celebrities are the ones known for sure. This book was fun to read. ENJOY!

3.0 out of 5 stars in or out, July 12, 2000

2 or 3 lines, at most a paragraph of quotes. A few too many quotes from things like letters to the editor or newspaper headlines.Too many Ellen DeGeneres and her mom quotes but overall amusing beach reading though less so than Hollywood Babble On. If you want any in depth writing about the subject try his Hollywood Lesbians or Conversations With My Elders for something more interesting
