Rachel Wood has inherited a B&B from her Great Great Aunt Gertrude in, of all places, the Alaskan wilderness. Working as a muralist in LA and living paycheck to paycheck, Rachel decides she'll go to Alaska and check out the B&B, see what is has to offer maybe even sell it. Rachel thanks her lucky stars that her best friend's brother, Kellen McInty, was able to go with her. After a harrowing, white-knuckled arrival in a float plane, and being left in the middle of nowhere by a pilot who apparently believes that a successful flight means landing with both wings intact, Rachel and Kellen hike their way to the B&B. The strange characters and even more strange happenings eventually push Rachel and Kellen together, and once Rachel begins to see things as she never has before, she begins to wonder why she has never seen Kel for the man he truly is.***** Kellen has loved Rachel for what seems like forever, and being thrown together with her in such close quarters in the plane and later in her aunt's cottage, is almost more than he can resist. He is determined to keep her at arms' length, no easy feat given how she in all of her glorious girliness, is afraid of her own shadow and is constantly plastering her gorgeous self to him. Kel doesn't know what to think about the weird goings-on at the B&B, the two on-site caretakers and two visitors who put the s-t-r-a-n-g-e- in strange, but he's determined to get to the bottom of their bizarre behavior.***** Rachel and Kellen are so wonderful for each other that readers will be crossing their fingers for them to get together. The secondary characters and their motives are questionable to say the least, but you can't help but care for them and want them to all be happy. Excepting the bad guys that is - but with that being said, who would ever have expected pirates to show up in the middle of Alaska?***** Jill Shalvis has outdone herself with the humor in this book - and as for first person writing? I'm a full-fledged convert and will never reject another book written in this style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A keeper-- its hot and funny, September 17, 2006

Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out Of This World (Paperback)
Out Of This World by Jill Shalvis is a wonderfully funny and wickedly sexy tale.

Artist Rachel Wood has inherited a B & B from a distant relative. Problem is the place is in Alaska of all places. Rachel enlists the help of her best friends brother Kellan McInty to go with her to check the inn out. Hideaway B & B is deep in no mans land and for a city girl like Rachel it's a shocker.

Rachel and Kellan decide to explore around the place and something very strange happens. Rach can now see through things and Kel has gone all supermanish. Getting to the bottom of these bizarre goings on test their patience. Plus all of sudden these two friends can't keep their hands off each other.

Out Of This World delivers a funny, quirky and hotter then hot romance. Both Rach and Kel give their take on things and that really made it an enjoyable read. Added to this mix are the employees, guests of the inn and some out of this world pirates that really up the laughs. This book was such a treat to read, made me laugh out loud so many times. The romance is top notch and it's a joy to watch friends become so much more.

We have ditzy Rachael who inherits a B&B in Alaska from some crazy great-aunt. She decides to go visit it to see if she is going to keep it or sell, etc and takes her best friends brother (who she has been very good friends with forever). Kellan is a dolphin trainer and generally Mr. Nice Guy. However, he's been in love with Rachel since he's known her but she doesn't see him as anything but a friend because he doesn't meet her bad boy requirements. They go to Alaska to check out this B&B and strange things happen, including getting struck by lightening and acquiring some interesting new abilities.

This is more a paranormal romance type book than a romance and in my opinion a poorly written book regardless of how you classify it. If you are going to write, especially paranormal or science fiction the goal is to make it believable. To write the scenes and create a world that even though it isn't true the reader believes in enough to visualize and enjoy the story. However, that just didn't happen here. The whole thing just felt poorly put together and absolutely awful.

There were NO redeeming characters. Rachael whined a lot until the end and was stupid and short sited. Kellan is just too good to be true (and if he was true why would he be with Rachael). And the supporting characters were ridiculous. What happened wasn't actually explained until the last 50 pages or so, which meant that the reader was as annoyed and aggravated as Rachael and Kellan by not knowing what was going on.

All in all, I'd say skip this book no matter what you are looking for. Try some of the author's other books if you'd like, but not this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of this World was not out of this world at all!, March 2, 2009

This review is from: Out Of This World (Paperback)
I usually enjoy Jill Shalvis books because they are funny and romantic reads that I can't put down. Out of this World was an exception. It was not worth the time or money. It had the potential to be really good based on the premise, but it failed to deliver the goods. It starts with the hero and heroine going to a remotely isolated place in Alaska because the heroine has inherited a bed and breakfast. This sounds great and very promising, but soon takes a dive. It is not titled Out of this World either because Alaska is so remote and so different from the heroine's city life, but for another entirely different reason. It has a paranormal equation which really surprised me and to which I could have done without. This book seems like a departure from other Jill Shalvis books that I've read and that I've really enjoyed. This one is mediocre at best. I was also very disappointed in how many times characters (the hero in particular) in the book said the word Jesus. It could have rivaled the Bible the number of times it was used, and personally, I found it to be distracting and offensive. Not a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, but different, February 17, 2009
This review is from: Out Of This World (Paperback)
First off, let me say that if you are wanting to read a romance novel then this book is not for you! It does have a lot of explicit sex in it, but the science fiction in it is crazy! I loved the book though because I like to think out of the box. It was really funny at times also, I found myself laughing out loud. Also, one thing I really liked about it was how quickly Rach and Kel hooked up, thats what got me more interested in the book. I tend to dislike romance novels that prolong two people getting together, its very frustrating. If you're wanting something different to read then for sure pick this book up! It is also a very easy read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strange..., November 3, 2008

This book had the potential of being outrageously funny, but just came off to me as strange. It just strayed too far out of the realms of believability for my tastes. Don't know if I will buy more books from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first chick-lit, March 30, 2007
By
This review is from: Out Of This World (Paperback)
I was a bit shocked that the library carried a book with explicit sex scenes. And to think that before I knew about that I almost let my teenager read it!
I would have probably enjoyed the book much more without all the XXX, but I don't want to be a hypocrite: the sex made the book real and sensual.
Oh, I just loved Kellan's character. he is my dream guy: the best friend who always loved you faithfully but you never noticed (Ahem, blind??) and now... he's totally hot!
Some people complained about the sci-fi parts of it not being... believable or something. WHO CARES? The story is great and it happens in Alaska!
There. Read it if you like light chick-lit with lot's of sex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jill Shalvis RULES!, March 23, 2007
This review is from: Out Of This World (Paperback)
Ms. Shalvis was a new to me author; she'll be an auto-buy, now. OUT OF THIS WORLD is a delightful, campy, touch-of-paranormal contemp romance. I don't know how else to describe it. It's one heck of a good-time, sexy read.

Shalvis has her finger on the pulse of setting, characterization, and dialogue. I loved the lighter storyline - sort of an X-(Wo)Men meet the Pirates of the Caribbean, with a delicious happy ending. ; )

I can't wait to read more of her books!

This book was NOT what I expected at all. The first book I read by this author was "Get A Clue" and it was awesome, so I decided to get two more of Jill's books but this one was a totally let down. If you like books about characters with special powers and ablilities then I would suggest this one but if you don't, don't waste your money. It is a good thing I only paid $1.00 for this book because that is all that it is worth. I couldn't even finish this.

3.0 out of 5 stars What happens in Alaska stays in Alaska, February 15, 2007
By
This review is from: Out Of This World (Paperback)
Muralist Rachel receives an unusual inheritance from an aunt she barely knows - a hotel in the wilderness of Alaska. She talks pal Kellen to accompany her to see the inn and make a determination of what to do with it. When they arrive, both appear to be struck by lightening and soon take on characteristics they did not have prior (she gets x-ray vision and he gets super human strength). They also suddenly find each other irresistible (well, Kell has nursed a crush on Rachel since grade school), and passion explodes between the two of them.

As they try to figure out what the heck is going on, and getting answers from the not so talkative staff, the two find themselves on a roller coaster ride of a weekend. Will they ever get rid of those special powers? Will their passion continue when they return to civilization or will what happened in Alaska stay in Alaska?

Not a fan or paranormal, I would usually put the book down and move on to another. But Shalvis manages to make a decent story that captures the reader's attention both with her attention to detail, witty dialogue, and dual first person narrative. By no means a great book, but it was entertaining.
