Biography

A dozen years after the breakthrough debut of Jagged Little Pill, an album which earned four Grammys, sold 30 million records and spawned a dedicated worldwide fan base, Alanis Morissette remains not only an enduringly popular artist, but one whose success stems from a fierce commitment to authenticity and, to an equal extent, vulnerability. Both of these traits enable her to climb to new ground… Read more in Amazon's Alanis Morissette Store

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best From So-Called Chaos!, September 5, 2004
By
Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Out Is Through 1 (Audio CD)
Alanis Morissette made her welcome return to the music scene in May 2004 with her fourth proper studio album, and first in more than two years. It was called "So-Called Chaos," and in my opinion is one of the best albums of the year to date! Being the massive fan of Alanis that I am (yeah, my Amazon nick name was influenced by her as I consider myself to be a somewhat jagged teenager - not the norm!), I anticipated the release of her new album months before and practically counted down the days. I wasn't expecting anything to top "Jagged Little Pill" and "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" in terms of genius and breaking ground, but still my expectations were high. I wasn't overtly impressed when I first heard "Everything," but it did grow on me. There was one song, however, that I did like, which was called "Out Is Through." I was happy and surprised when I heard this would be the second single from the album.

Out Is Through only received a European release, whilst as the second single, America got "Eight Easy Steps." Out Is Through received hardly any promotion in the UK and sadly missed the Top 40 by a mile. I blame Alanis' record label - Maverick - for this! They messed up the singles from "Under Rug Swept," and that pattern seems to be repeated on So-Called Chaos! The song itself is a fantastic mid-tempo number with very catchy hooks and melodies, making it pure classic Alanis. The rock is there, but not as much as before. This is just a feel-good summer choon!

Out Is Through opens with a melodic and light, breezy guitar and Alanis starts singing the first verse, "Every time you raise your voice I see the greener grass. Every time you run for cover I see this pasture. Every time we're in a funk I picture a different choice. Anytime we're in a rut, this distant grandeur." Alanis then moves into the bridge, "My tendency to want to do away feels natural and my urgency to dream of softer places feels understandable but I know..." Then the song really starts to kick in as the guitars rev up and Alanis sings the chorus, "The only way out is through, the faster we're in the better. The only way out is through ultimately. The only way out is through, the only way we'll feel better. The only way out is through ultimately." Alanis then moves into the second verse, "Every time that I'm confused I think there must be easier ways. Every time our horns are locked I'm towel throwing. Every time we're at a loss we've bolted from difficulty. Anytime we're in a stalemate, a final bowing."

Alanis then sings the second bridge, but it's slightly different: "My tendency to want to hide away feels easier and the immediacy of picturing another place, comforting to go but I know..." She then sings the second chorus, before moving into the best part of the song in my own opinion. She sings, "We could just walk away and hide our heads in the sand. We could just call it quits only to start all over again with somebody else." She then sings the third verse, which is my favourite of the three because it's got that classic Alanis psycho-babble! She sings, "Every time we're stuck in struggle I'm down for the count that day. Every time I dream of quick fix I'm assuaged. Now I know it's hard when it's through and I'm damned if I don't, no quick fix way. What formerly was treatment silent's now outdated." Alanis then sings the third bridge, which is again slightly altered; "My tendency to want to run feels unnatural now. The urgency to want to give to you what I want most feels good and I know..." And as you'd expect, Alanis belts out that catchy chorus a few times more, before a short guitar solo at the end of the song finishes it off!

The video to Out Is Through is pretty rubbish really! I've only seen it once and I was like, "What is this, Alanis?!" It's basically just a bunch of clips put together with performances from her recent promotional trip around the world promoting So-Called Chaos. However, you're not buying the CD for the video, you're buying it for the superb music Miss Morissette keeps pumping out! Plus, the cover of the CD is so cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out Is Through, August 17, 2004

This review is from: Out Is Through 1 (Audio CD)
I rated this single five ****ing stars. That's enough to know that this single is something to own. The cover and the songs are superb!

I don't know who was in charge of her outfit or who took that picture. But I want them to know that they knew what they were doing and they have talent. So that means they rock. And so do you Alanis.

I have to admit that I was not fond of Out Is Through at first. But when I listened to it several more times, it grew on me. I fell in love with it. Some say that it was made for the radio and that it reminded them of Michelle Branch? I don't listen to her but if they say that this song reminds them of her, then I guess I better start listening to her. (Not abandoning you Alanis!) Because this is a good song.

Spineless is one of my favorite songs from So-Called Chaos and to hear it from Vancouver as an acoustic song, it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed listening to it. I just love how sarcastic she is in this song. Go Alanis! I can't decide which one I like better: the album version or the acoustic version. Hm...

I so recommend this single.
