4.0 out of 5 stars Out Through the N Door = Fresh and Beyond!, May 17, 2001

Out Through the N Door is fresh and beyond! I first heard a tape of the Broun Fellinis about three years ago and loved it. As tapes go, I had lost it or it got destroyed in my balky cassette player. Feeling the need for something new, I recently purchased "Out Through the N Door" on a chance it would be good. Happily, I was not let down. The Broun Fellinis are interesting in that they are a power trio of bass, drums and sax (my favorite combo). The Saxophone being my instrument (see my bio) really is a draw to me for this album. Personally, I feel anyone that is forward thinking and is looking for fresh ideas would like this album. A lot of music today unfortunately is canned, and with time disintegrates into total obscurity or is marketed to a very younger mindset. The album is packed with forays into outré funk rhythmic melodies. You can hear the influences of, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman to James Brown and the Last Poets. It's a shame you don't see these guys getting the airplay and exposure they deserve. Each tune in Out Through the NDoor holds it's own, and grooves with an infectious dynamic intensity. I highly recommend it. My only criticism is that there is a lot of tenor sax and other horns would be welcomed. I.e., alto, soprano even barisax would be great. Perhaps on future releases there might be an interesting guest.

I'd like to see the Fellinis the next time they're in the NYC area.

If you are a fan of Acid Jazz or even traditional Jazz, this is one you definitely want in your music collection. This CD is the next best thing to seeing the Broun Fellinis live.

This a good CD. The HDCD encoding gives this all-live studio jam a richness and depth that I can really really notice on my medium-to-high-quality sound system. I wish every CD had this HDCD stuff on it, but sadly it appears to be a dying tech. .. .

At any rate, you can feel the excitement of these guys and their music when you listen - I've seen them live and they sound just as great on this CD as they do live. If you like this sort of acid-jazz, free form bop kind of stuff (which I do, a lot), then you'll love this CD.
